UConn Claims Title Share
With three regular-season games remaining for 10 of the 11 BIG EAST women’s basketball squads, No. 1/1 UConn clinched at least a share of the regular-season title for the 20
th time in program history. The Huskies won at Xavier on Saturday, 83-32, to improve to 15-0 in BIG EAST play, while Creighton upset No. 19/19 DePaul, 83-72, dropping the Blue Demons into third place in the standings at 10-3. Marquette, which defeated Villanova on Friday (65-57) rose to second place at 12-3. With three games remaining for UConn, Marquette and DePaul, the Golden Eagles could only match the Huskies in the standings at 15-3 (.833) by winning out and the Huskies losing out, while the Blue Demons can get no closer than 13-3, or .813. Marquette and UConn conclude the regular season against each other on March 1, in a game airing on CBS Sports Network at 8 p.m. ET, while the Golden Eagles and Blue Demons meet this coming Wednesday at 5 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Notables
- Marquette’s win over Villanova on Friday marked a pivotal season sweep of the Wildcats for the Golden Eagles. The win, accompanied by today’s results, puts Marquette in second place for the first time since Feb. 6.
- Creighton rookie Emma Ronsiek (27 points) shined against DePaul for the second time this season, but this time her efforts helped the Bluejays to the win. It marked the third consecutive year Creighton knocked off the nationally ranked Blue Demons on their home court, something no visiting squad has done since Notre Dame, 2008-10. Ronsiek had 28 against the Blue Demons back on Dec. 22.
- Desiree Elmore had game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds as Seton Hall fended off a late surge from visiting Providence on Saturday. Among Elmore’s 23 points were the 1,000th of her career. The Hall jumped from fifth to fourth in the standings with the win.
- UConn’s BIG EAST regular-season title is its 20th, winning at least a share in 1989, ’90, ’91, ’94, ’95, ’96, ’97, ’98, ’99, ’00, ’01, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’10, ’11 and now ‘21.
- Action continues on Sunday with two games tipping off at 2 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available of FloSports. Villanova travels to Georgetown while Providence will quickly pivot to St. John’s.
