#BIGEASTmbb Minute: St. John's-Villanova, UConn-Georgetown Set For Tuesday

On Tuesday’s schedule, Villanova and St. John’s will play for the second time this month and Georgetown and Connecticut will meet after a much longer absence.

The Wildcats, ranked eighth in this week’s AP poll, and the Johnnies tip off at Finneran Pavilion at 8 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.  St. John’s (14-9, 8-8 BIG EAST) was able to keep Villanova (14-3, 9-2 BIG EAST) on its heels in the first meeting and take a 70-59 victory on Feb. 3 at Carnesecca Arena.  The 59 points were the fewest for Villanova this season.

Since the first matchup, Villanova has won four straight led by Jermaine Samuels who is averaging 18.2 points over that stretch.  St. John’s Julian Champagnie still leads the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 19.8 points, while freshman Posh Alexander is tops in steals with a 2.6 mark.  The two teams have split their last six meetings.

UConn (10-6, 7-6 BIG EAST) and Georgetown (7-10, 5-7 BIG EAST) are playing at McDonough Arena at 9 p.m. on FS1.  It’s the first meeting since the Huskies won 72-69 on Jan. 14, 2017.  UConn leads the BIG EAST in scoring defense, allowing only 65.2 points per game.  James Bouknight is averaging 20.1 points, but has not played enough games to be ranked among the statistical leaders.  He had 21 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s 68-60 loss at Villanova.

The Hoyas have won two in a row and four of their last six.  They are coming off an 81-75 victory over Seton Hall and have placed five players in double figures each of the last two games.  Jahvon Blair ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 16.2 average and first in the league in minutes played, averaging 37.4 per game.

Going into Tuesday, home teams own a 42-35 (.545) edge in BIG EAST games.  Home teams have won seven of the last nine contests.
