#BIGEASTmbb Minute: Villanova, UConn Win Tuesday

Four Games Set for Wednesday

In Tuesday’s action, Villanova turned the tables on St. John’s, avenging a loss earlier this month, and UConn used a second-half surge to win at Georgetown and move into fourth place in the league standings.

The Wildcats, ranked eighth by AP this week, started quickly against the Johnnies, compiling leads of 20-9, 31-17 and 42-25 by halftime en route to an 81-58 victory at Finneran Pavilion.  St. John’s had won the first meeting 70-59 on Feb. 3.

Caleb Daniels paced four players in double figures with 17 points for Villanova (15-3, 10-2 BIG EAST).  Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels each added 14 points.  Julian Champagnie led St. John’s (14-10, 8-9) with 16 points.  It was his 29th straight game reaching double figures.

Georgetown led UConn 41-40 in the second half before the Huskies put together a 21-7 run to secure a 70-57 win at McDonough Arena.  James Bouknight posted his second straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Backcourt partner R.J. Cole added 17 points.

The Hoyas (7-11, 5-8 BIG EAST) were led by Qudus Wahab, who registered his league-leading sixth double-double with a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Wednesday’s schedule is busy with four games.  Marquette goes out-of-conference to play at North Carolina on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.  MU’s only win in the series came in the 1977 NCAA title game.

In league play, Seton Hall visits Butler at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network followed by DePaul at 13th-ranked Creighton at 9 p.m.  FS1 will televise Xavier at Providence at 9 p.m.

Going into Tuesday, home teams own a 43-36 (.544) edge in BIG EAST games.  Home teams have won seven of the last nine contests.
