#BEtourney Update
Following the results of four games on Wednesday, three seeds were solidified for the upcoming BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by Jeep. Top-ranked UConn will be the No. 1 seed and Marquette clinched the No. 2 seed following its win at 24
th-ranked DePaul. Creighton, which did not play yesterday, clinched the No. 6 seed based on other results throughout the day. The Huskies will tipoff BIG EAST Tournament play on FS1 at noon on Quarterfinal Saturday, March 6, and face the winner of the 8-9 First Round game. Second-seeded Marquette gets the 7-10 first-round winner, with the Golden Eagles tipping off on March 6 at 6 p.m., in a game airing on FS2. The sixth-seeded Bluejays will face the 11-seed in the final game of the First Round on March 5, set for a 5 p.m. tipoff, and will stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available on FloSports. The remaining eight seeds will be firmed up over the course of the remaining nine games of the regular season. UConn can clinch the regular-season title outright with a win at Creighton tonight after already claiming at least a share of it last week. A loss for the Huskies keeps Marquette in the running to share the crown. The 2021 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament is set for March 5-8 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
Road Sweep
Road teams went 4-0 on Wednesday, which included two games decided in overtime. Villanova set the tone early by rallying to win at Providence. The Friars led by nine in the fourth and by three with 13 seconds left before Maddy Siegrist’s long-distance three-pointer with six seconds left forced OT. Siegrist scored four of VU’s eight overtime points en route to 24 on the afternoon to lead the Wildcats to the 63-58 win at Alumni Hall. Georgetown-St. John’s followed, with seven ties and six lead changes in the back-and-forth overtime battle in Queens. Three Hoyas finished in doubles figures and the bench outscored the Red Storm’s 14-2 as GU snapped a 12-game skid with the 62-58 victory. The rivalry game between No. 24/23 DePaul and RV/RV Marquette also featured seven ties and six lead changes, but the Golden Eagles trailed for just two minutes in the contest to avenge the loss to the Blue Demons earlier this season and split the regular-season series for the second straight year. Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures, including a game-high 25 for Selena Lott. DePaul was within two possessions with under five minutes to play before MU went on a decisive 12-2 run to seal the 85-71 win. The final game of the night saw Seton Hall set program records for points (108), three-pointers made (17) and assists (Lauren Park-Lane, 15) in a high-scoring 108-65 win at Xavier. Park-Lane added 17 points for the double-double while Andra Espinoza-Hunter led all scorers with 25.
