Butler Is Only Home Team to Win

The unusual success of road teams in BIG EAST play continued Saturday with three of four visiting teams returning home with a victory.  The results left road teams with a 30-29 edge in league games heading into Sunday.

St. John’s increased its winning streak to six games and five straight in the BIG EAST with a 92-81 victory at Providence.  Julian Champagnie notched 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  Posh Alexander had 21 points and four assists.  After building a 49-41 halftime lead, the Friars (9-10, 5-8 BIG EAST) opened the second half with a 15-1 spurt and took a 56-51 lead before St. John’s (13-7, 7-6 BIG EAST) bounced back.  The Johnnies have won four straight BIG EAST road game for the first time since 1998-99.  PC’s Nate Watson was dominant around the basket with a career-high 30 points.

Seton Hall has enjoyed plenty of recent road success and it continued with an 80-73 win at Connecticut.  The Pirates (11-8, 8-5 BIG EAST) did not trail in the game, though the Huskies (8-4, 5-4 BIG EAST) cut an 18-point deficit in the first half to two points in the second half.  The Hall’s Sandro Mamukelashvili scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Myles Cale added 20 points.  Seton Hall has won 12 of its last 16 league road contests.  UConn’s Jalen Gaffney came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points.

Creighton ended the first half at Marquette with a 13-2 run to take a 38-33 lead, then withstood a late rally to take a 71-68 victory.  The No. 15 Bluejays (14-5, 10-4 BIG EAST) used their balanced scoring ways with Christian Bishop leading four players in double figures with 14 points.  Damien Jefferson and Marcus Zegarowski each had 13 points.  Marquette (9-10, 5-8 BIG EAST) rallied late behind D.J. Carton’s 16 points.

Butler was the only home team to register a win, defeating DePaul.  The Blue Demons (3-8, 1-8 BIG EAST) jumped out to an 18-6 lead before the Bulldogs (6-10, 5-8 BIG EAST) settled down to win 68-58.  A 12-1 run midway through the second half game gave Butler control.  The Bulldogs’ Chuck Harris and Bryce Nze each scored 22 points.  DePaul’s Javon Freeman-Liberty impressed with 26 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Sunday’s schedule shows one game, Georgetown at No. 3 Villanova on FOX at 2:30 p.m. ET.  The Hoyas (5-8, 3-5 BIG EAST) are coming off an 86-79 win at Creighton while the Wildcats (11-2, 6-1 BIG EAST) lost 70-59 at St. John’s.
