NEW YORK – All three of the BIG EAST field hockey weekly award winners were freshmen with Old Dominion’s Marlon de Bruijne, Liberty’s Azul Iritxity Irigoyen and UConn’s Claire van den Noort.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Marlon de Bruijne, Old Dominion, Fr., F (Den Bosch, Netherlands)
Old Dominion freshman forward Marlon de Bruijne scored seven goals in a 2-0 weekend for the Monarchs against the Villanova Wildcats. de Bruijne netted three goals in the first game, as ODU defeated VU, 3-1. It was the Monarchs’ first hat trick since Sept. 2018 and the first freshman hat trick since the 2010 season. The forward followed that performance with four goals in the 7-0 victory. de Bruijne was BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Azul Iritxity Irigoyen, Liberty, Fr., GK (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Liberty keeper Azul Iritxity Irigoyen recorded her first career collegiate shutout in the Lady Flames 2-0 win at Temple on Saturday. The rookie made a career-best six saves in the contest. In two starts over four appearances, she is 3-0 with a .818 save percentage and has a 0.80 goals against average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Claire van den Noort, Connecticut, Fr., B (Baricum, Netherlands)
UConn freshman back Claire van den Noort dished out two assists, both on penalty corner chances, during UConn’s 4-0 victory over Providence. The assists marked the second and third of the season for the rookie. Van den Noort also anchored a UConn defense that shut out the Friars and only allowed the Friars to muster one shot on the afternoon.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Jessica Dembrowski, UConn, Sr., F
Dembrowski scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in Connecticut’s 4-0 win over Providence in Sunday’s conference-opener for the Huskies. The two scores marked a single-game high for the senior.
Daniella Rhodes, Liberty, So., F
Rhodes scored two goals in Liberty’s sweep of Temple this weekend. She scored in the 40th minute of Saturday’s game, off a penalty corner. On Sunday, Rhodes scored late in the fourth quarter to seal Liberty’s 2-0 win.
Cristina Carotenuto, Temple, Sr., G
Made 11 saves, including a season-high six on Sunday for a .733 save percentage. Allowed four goals for a 2.33 goals against average. She led a defense that held Liberty to a season-low of two goals in back-to-back games.
