Kate Shaffer, UConn, So., A
In a back-and-forth battle with UMass on Saturday, Shaffer gave the Huskies the lead three times (2-1, 6-5, 11-10) and tied the game at 12-12 with under nine minutes to play. She finished game with a team-high four goals and game-high 10 shots while adding a ground ball. Shaffer’s four goals tied for the BIG EAST single-game high last week, as did her 10 shots.
BIG EAST Midfielder Of The Week
Natalia Lynch, Georgetown, Grad., M
Lynch filled the stat sheet against a pair of ranked teams last week, combining for six goals, two assists, five ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers in narrow setbacks to No. 14 Loyola and No. 12 Towson. Against the Greyhounds she had four goals off six shots and four ground balls, before following with two goals, two assists, four draws and three caused turnovers against the Tigers. Lynch’s points per game average (4.00) tied for the BIG EAST lead last week.
BIG EAST Defensive Player Of The Week
Molly Little, Denver, Grad., D
Little led the 22
nd-ranked Pioneers to a win over San Diego State on Friday, anchoring a defense which saw the Aztecs commit 22 turnovers and get outshot 41-25. Little added four draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover, while Denver disrupted SDSU’s clear attempts on five occasions while the Pioneers finished 21-of-23 on clears, including a perfect 5-for-5 in the second half.
BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week
Kayla Gulmi Villanova, Fr., A
Gulmi totaled four points off a goal and three assists last week for the Wildcats, including a three-point performance against Hofstra on Saturday. The rookie’s assist on Wednesday against La Salle came on Brittany Bruno’s game-tying goal with 1:58 to play. Bruno went on to score the game winner with seven seconds left. Gulmi’s three assists last week tied for the BIG EAST lead.
