NEW YORK – St. John’s Julian Champagnie has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Connecticut forward Adama Sanogo has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players helped their respective teams to 2-0 weeks in the final week of the regular season.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Julian Champagnie, St. John’s, G-F, So. – Champagnie averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a pair of victories. In Saturday’s season finale, the sophomore scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in an 81-71 comeback victory over Seton Hall. Earlier in the week, the sophomore recorded his seventh double-double with 16 points and 10 boards in an 81-67 win over Providence. With a 19.5 scoring mark in league play, Champagnie is the BIG EAST scoring champion.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Adama Sanogo, UConn, F, Fr. – Sanogo helped the Huskies in a pair of wins that lifted the team into the No. 3 seed in this week’s BIG EAST Tournament. In a 69-58 win at Seton Hall, he had 16 points and nine rebounds. In a 98-82 home victory against Georgetown, the forward had 10 points and 10 rebounds. He blocked two shots in both games. Sanogo is averaging 6.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 blocks for the season. His blocks average ranks second in the BIG EAST.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
James Bouknight, Connecticut, G, So. – Averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Scored a team-high 21 points in a victory versus Georgetown (98-82).
Marcus Zegarowski, Creighton, G, Jr. – Averaged 21.0 points in a 1-1 week. Tied his career high with 32 points in a win over Butler (93-73) in the season finale.
Chudier Bile, Georgetown, F, Gr. – Had 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in a win over Xavier (73-66). Averaged 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week.
D.J. Carton, Marquette, G, So. – In a 2-0 week, averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Had 20 points, seven boards and three assists in a win at DePaul (77-71).
David Duke, Providence, G, Jr. – Averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 1-1 week. Posted 20 points and seven rebounds in a victory over Villanova (54-52).
