BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Boris Spanjaard, DePaul, Sr. (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands)
DePaul senior Boris Spanjaard went 4-0 in DePaul’s weekend sweep beating the University of Chicago 7-0 and Xavier 5-2. He clinched the doubles point at No. 1 vs. Chicago. The senior clinched doubles point at No. 1 against Xavier with a 6-2 victory. He also scored the winning match point with his victory at No. 3 singles as he won 6-1, 6-4. Overall, Spanjaard is 11-3 in doubles with all but one match being played at the No. 1 spot and is 3-0 in conference doubles.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Annalise Klopfer, Villanova, Jr. (Palm Harbor, Fla.)
Villanova junior Annalise Klopfer went undefeated with three wins at No. 1 singles in three matches last week, including winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) over three-time BIG EAST Player of the Year Jessica Livianu from St. John’s. Klopfer also teamed with senior Lexi DeNucci for a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles as the Wildcats defeated St. Johns for the second straight season. Klopfer won her matches at No. 1 singles in straight sets against Providence and Connecticut as well. The Wildcat junior was 2-1 in doubles matches during the week.
Notable Performances:
- Butler’s Drew Michael helped the Bulldogs sweep Xavier, 7-0, as he went 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles and a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
- Bulldog teammate Delaney Schurhamer had a solid performance as she won her singles match against Xavier, 6-2, 6-2, being one of two Bulldogs to pick up a point in singles. She also helped earn the doubles point with a 6-4 win with teammate Sara Linn.
- DePaul grad student Aspasia Avgeri went 3-0 in singles last week, highlighted by defeating XU’s No. 1 singles player who was ranked No. 107 by the ITA.
- St. John’s senior Djuro Opacic continued his dominance on the No. 1 court as he won his doubles and singles matches this weekend against his Drexel opponents. He is a perfect 10-0 thus far in 2021 after defeating Youssef Lahlou of Drexel 6-2, 6-0.
- Josh Robinson of Villanova went 3-0 in doubles matches and 2-1 in singles last week, helping VU snap a three-match losing streak.
- Xavier’s Anna Roggenburk went unbeaten in a 2-0 week against BIG EAST opponents Butler and DePaul. In addition to helping pick up the doubles point against DePaul, Roggenburk picked up the match point after battling through three sets on the No. 2 singles courts. Roggenburk also picked up a No. 1 singles win in a 4-3 win at Butler. In singles, Roggenburk battled back from falling in the first set and through tie-breakers in the second set to force a third, set, taking the No. 2 court 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3 to pick up the final point of the match secure the win for the Musketeers.
