Georgetown, Seton Hall Advance To #BEfútbol Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C.  –  The top two teams from the East Division, Georgetown and Seton Hall, advance in the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship Presented by JEEP. East No. 1 Georgetown shut out Midwest No. 2 Creighton 1-0 in the first semifinal at Shaw Field on Thursday. East No. 2 Seton Hall defeated Midwest No. 1 Marquette, 4-1, in the second game. With the victories, Georgetown and Seton Hall will face off in the BIG EAST Championship title match for the first time. The final will be played on Saturday, April 17 at 3 p.m. on FS2.
 
Saturday will be Georgetown’s fourth consecutive trip to the Championship game. It will be the first final appearance for Seton Hall since 2004.

The Hoyas’ (8-0-2) lone goal was scored by Joe DaLuz in the 84th minute. It was DaLuz’s first career goal. The assist was credited to Paul Rothrock. Georgetown, ranked second nationally, was outshot by Creighton (6-6-0) 12-8 with three on goal to the Bluejays' four. BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Giannis Nikopolidis took the win managing four saves on the afternoon. The Bluejays had their best chance midway through the half as Creighton had a 1v1 one with Nikopolidis. The junior keeper was off his line, but dove to his left and got a hand on the ball to disrupt the run and keep the game scoreless.

In the second semifinal, two ranked teams faced off. No. 11 Seton Hall scored two early goals on No. 17 Marquette and never looked back as the Pirates advanced to their first final appearance since 2004. Seton Hall (8-1-3) Junior Maurice Williams scored two goals for Seton Hall, which included the eventual game-winner. Freshman Mattias Almeida Sundell scored his first career goal and assisted two others. Sundell scored in the 6th minute and the Pirates quickly extended their lead to 2-0 as Williams headed in his first of the afternoon three minutes later off a rebounded free kick.  Coming back from the half, the Pirates extended their lead to 4-0 as Williams scored again in the 59th minute, followed by C.J. Tibbling a minute later. Marquette (8-2-1) got on the board in the 73rd minute with a goal from Sam Thornton, his first of the year. Lukas Sunesson assisted the goal. Shots were 12-11 in Seton Hall's favor, and the Pirates converted four of their five shots on goal. Seton Hall senior Andreas Nota earned the win in goal with six saves. Marquette keeper Jackson Weyman made four saves.
