#BIGEASTwsoc Championship Final Set For Sunday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The title game of the 2020-21 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship presented by JEEP is set for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, as top seeds Georgetown and Butler meet in the final for the third time in the last four seasons. Sunday’s tilt from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I., will air on FS1, with John Fanta and Monika Moore on the call. The championship game winner receives the BIG EAST’s automatic bid into the 48-team NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship Selection Show is set for Monday, April 19, at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Higher seeds prevailed in Friday’s semifinal round as Georgetown, the No. 1 seed out of the East Division, knocked off Creighton, the No. 2 seed out of the Midwest Division, 2-1 in overtime, while the Midwest’s No. 1 seed, Butler, topped the East’s No. 2 seed, UConn, also by a score of 2-1. Georgetown (10-0-1) and Butler (10-1-0) have met in the BIG EAST Championship final in three of the last four years, with the Hoyas claiming the last two meetings: 1-0 in 2018 and 3-0 in 2017, both at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The 2018 and 2017 titles are two of Georgetown’s three in league history, also claiming the crown in 2016. Butler has one BIG EAST Championship to its credit, coming in 2015 when it defeated Providence 1-0 in Omaha, Neb.

With Friday’s wins, Georgetown improved to 12-13-4 (.483) all-time in the BIG EAST Championship, while Butler improved to 6-4-1 (.591). The title game appearance is the fifth straight for the Hoyas and sixth overall, while the Bulldogs are in the title game for the fourth time. GU is 3-2-0 in championship games, while BU is 1-2-0.

With Georgetown playing in the East Division and Butler in the Midwest Division this spring, the teams have not met since the 2019 regular season. Despite a number of opportunities for both squads, that Oct. 20 match at Butler finished in a 0-0 double-overtime draw. Georgetown leads the all-time series with Butler, 7-1-2, with the Bulldogs’ lone win in the series coming during the 2015 regular season in Indianapolis.

Sunday’s match will pit not only the two best offensive teams in the BIG EAST against each other, but also two of the stingiest defenses. Butler leads the BIG EAST and ranks second nationally in goals per game with 3.45, while Georgetown lists second in the conference and 10th in Division I at 2.55. Georgetown’s Gia Vicari has a BIG EAST-best 10 goals on the year, including one in yesterday’s semifinal, while Butler’s Anja Savich ranks second in the league with nine scores; both rank in the top 20 nationally in goals per game. Georgetown has allowed just two goals all season, including one yesterday to Creighton, boasting the second-best goals against average (0.18) in Division I. Butler is tied for second in the BIG EAST, surrendering seven scores on the year, while its GAA (0.63) lists fourth in the league. BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Kelly Ann Livingstone anchors the back line for the Hoyas, while BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Stephanie Rodriguez holds down the defense for the Bulldogs.
