Creighton Surges To Lead In Women's Golf Championship


FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Creighton played easily its best round of the spring season and took the lead after the first round of the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship Presented by JEEP at the Club at Gateway in Fort Myers, Fla.  The Bluejays shot a team score of 295 (+7), the best total by a Creighton team since at least 2003.  Creighton holds a five-stroke lead over second-place Xavier and a six stroke edge over third-place Seton Hall.

Individually, Creighton sophomore Katie Allen sits atop the leaderboard after firing a 1-under 71, which tied her career best score.  She made seven birdies.  Two Bluejay freshmen, Gabby Tremblay and Claire Orcutt, offered strong support.  Tremblay is third after a 1-over 73.  Orcutt tied her best score this spring with a 3-over 75 and is in a six-way tie for fifth place. 

Xavier, the defending BIG EAST champion, shot 300 and Seton Hall was at 301.  Both teams had four golfers shoot 77 or better.  The Musketeers’ were led by senior Morgan Tinsley, who is second behind Creighton’s Allen, with an even-par 72.  Senior Andie Shukow shot 3-over 75.  Graduate student Mikayla Fitzpatrick, the 2019 BIG EAST medalist, carded a 4-over 76.  Junior Abby Kiefer was a stroke behind at 5-over 77.

Seton Hall was led by graduate student Lizzie Win, who made four birdies on the back nine en route to a 2-over 74.  Senior Mia Kness and graduate student Maddie Singer are in the six-way tie for fifth at 3-over 75.  Freshman Ginerva Ricciardelli shot a 5-over 77.

St. John’s is in fourth place after shooting 313 (+25).  The Red Storm’s top performer was grad student Linda Wang, who carded a 3-over 75.  Senior Andrea Sanchez and sophomore Cloe Clocchiatti shot 79 (+7).

Butler was three strokes behind St. John’s at 316 (+28).  Junior Claire Edwards led the Bulldogs with a 75 and is in the big tie for fifth on the leaderboard.  Graduate student Rayna Oosterhuis shot a 7-over 79.

Georgetown shot 321 (+33).  The Hoyas had not played in formal competition this spring until today’s round.  Gabriella Gilrowski led the team with a 5-over 77.  Megan Gormley had a 78.  Both are freshmen.
