NEW YORK – The bracket for the 2021 BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by JEEP will be set this weekend as conference play concludes for all six teams. Denver clinched the regular-season title and top seed last weekend, while Georgetown and UConn have also clinched berths. The final spot in the four-team field will go to either Marquette or Villanova. The Golden Eagles face Butler this weekend, the Wildcats travel to the Pioneers and the Huskies host the Hoyas. All matchups are two-game series, set for Friday and Sunday. For everyone’s path and possibilities to the BIG EAST Championship, see below.
Denver (10-1, 8-0 BIG EAST)
- Regular-season champion and BIG EAST Championship No. 1 seed for the second straight year – seeding cannot change
- Possible semifinal opponents: UConn, Geogetown, Villanova, Marquette
UConn (9-5, 5-3 BIG EAST)
- Clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth and can be the No. 2, 3 or 4 seeds
- Will be the No. 2 seed with a weekend sweep of Georgetown to finish 7-3
- Will be either the No. 3 or 4 seed by going 0-2 vs. Georgetown to finish 5-5
- No. 3 if Villanova or Marquette qualify in the Championship with a 4-6 record
- No. 4 if Villanova sweeps Denver to go to 6-4 or splits Denver to tie UConn at 5-5 – Villanova and UConn split the regular-season series, but the Wildcats would have the tiebreaker by way of its win over Denver (UConn went 0-2) – the top team in the standings
Georgetown (6-7, 5-3 BIG EAST)
- Clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth and can be the No. 2, 3 or 4 seeds
- Will be the No. 2 seed with a weekend sweep of UConn to finish 7-3
- Will be either the No. 3 or 4 seed by going 0-2 vs. UConn to finish 5-5
- No. 3 if Villanova or Marquette qualify in the Championship with a 4-6 record, or if Villanova splits with Denver to go to 5-5 – Hoyas have head-to-head sweep of VU
- No. 4 if Villanova sweeps Denver to go to 6-4
If Georgetown-UConn split to finish 6-4 – they would be the 2-3 semifinal
- Both went 0-2 against Denver; if Villanova wins at least one game at Denver to finish either fourth (5-5) or in a three-way tie for second (6-4), Georgetown would be the No. 2, UConn would be the No. 3, Villanova No. 4 – Wildcats lose the mini-conference at 1-3, revert back to head-to-head tiebreaking for UConn-GU, which would favor GU by way of its 3-1 record against the ‘group of teams’ tied at No. 2 (GU, UConn, VU)
- If Marquette and Villanova both finish 4-6 t tie for fourth place, both UConn and Georgetown would show a 3-1 record against that tie, and also have the same record against Denver and Butler – 2-3 seeding would fall to goal differential (or coin toss if still tied)
Villanova (6-8, 4-4 BIG EAST)
- Clinch a berth with one win at Denver or one Marquette loss at Butler
- No. 4 if swept by Denver and UConn sweeps Georgetown, regardless of what Marquette does
- If swept by Denver, Marquette sweeps Butler, UConn-Georgetown split, the next tiebreaker of goal differential would determine who qualifies between VU and MU
- No. 4 with a split or sweep of Denver accompanied by a Georgetown-UConn split
- No. 4 with a split of Denver accompanied by UConn sweeping Georgetown
- No. 4 if swept by Denver and UConn sweeps Georgetown
- No. 3 with a sweep of Denver accompanied by Georgetown-UConn not splitting (regardless of who wins)
- No. 3 with a split of Denver accompanied by Georgetown sweeping UConn
- Eliminated if swept by Denver and Georgetown sweeps UConn and Marquette sweeps Butler – would be tied with Marquette which they split, both went 0-2 vs. Denver, MU went 1-1 against GU, VU went 0-2
- Should UConn-Georgetown split, the next tiebreaker of goal differential between MU-VU would determine who qualifies
Marquette (5-9, 2-6 BIG EAST)
- Eliminated with one loss at Butler or one Villanova win at Denver
- If MU sweeps Butler and Denver sweeps Villanova to both be 4-6, will qualify if Georgetown sweeps UConn
- Should UConn-Georgetown split, the next tiebreaker of goal differential between MU-VU would determine who qualifies
Current goal differentials (max of 7 per game):
UConn: +21
Georgetown: +18
Villanova: -5
Marquette: -18
