Conshohocken, Pa.  –
No. 1 seed Connecticut won its ninth straight BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship title with a 2-0 victory over No. 3 seed Old Dominion on Saturday. The Huskies will receive the Conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. This year’s BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP was held at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa.

The eventual game-winner was scored in the first two minutes of play by UConn sophomore Erica Solomen. Freshman Aiyi Young scored the second goal in the 28th minute, scoring on a rebounded save after an initial shot off a corner.

Runner-up Old Dominion will hope to be one of the three at-large berths available as the NCAA reveals its national tournament bracket on Saturday night. This year’s championship will feature a 12-team field, instead of the usual 16. The bracket will be released at 10 p.m. ET on ncaa.com.

With the win, the Huskies advance to 11-1 on the season. The Monarchs fall to 9-5. It was the first meeting between the two teams this season.

UConn won the 2019 BIG EAST Championship by the same score, also against Old Dominion.

UConn sophomore midfielder Sophie Hamilton, who was recently honored as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Player and was one of five Huskies selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Freshman back Claire van den Noort, senior back Kourtney Kennedy, junior back Lindsay Dickinson and sophomore back Claire Jandewerth were the other Husky standout performers who earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team.

For Old Dominion, forward Marlon DeBruijne, midfielder Delphine LeJeune, defender Marlee McClendon and goalie Camilla MacGillivray earned All-Tournament honors. Despite the loss, MacGillivray made tremendous saves between the pipes for the Monarchs. She registered six in the championship game and two in the semifinal win.

The Huskies outshot the Lady Monarchs 12-3 and held an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.

Liberty’s freshman midfielder Reagan Underwood and Temple freshman Kaitlyn Cummins also earned All-Tournament recognition.
