#BETennis Finals Set With Top Two Seeds For Men And Women

No. 1 Xavier will take on No. 2 DePaul in the women’s championship; No. 1 DePaul will face No. 2 St. John’s in the men’s championship.

CAYCE, S.C. – The top two seeds in both the men’s and the women’s competitions at the 2021 BIG EAST Tennis Championships Presented by JEEP advanced after Sunday’s semifinal action at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. DePaul advanced to both the men’s and women’s finals. For the women, No. 1 seed Xavier defeated No. 4 seed St. John’s, 4-1 and No. 2 seed DePaul defeated No. 3 seed Villanova, 4-1. For the men, top-seeded DePaul defeated No. 4 Butler, 5-0. No. 2 St. John’s defeated No. 3 seed Marquette, 4-2.
 
Sunday’s semifinals were rescheduled from Saturday and the women’s competition was joined in progress after rain washed out Saturday’s action on the courts. Monday’s championship will start at 9 a.m. ET for the women and approximately 1 p.m. for the men. Both championship matches will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network Presented by SoFi. Coverage on BEDN will start at 8:50 a.m. John Fanta and Joe Gentry will call the action live from Cayce.
 
The Musketeers and Blue Demons will face off in the women’s final, while DePaul and St. John’s will play in the men’s final.

The women’s championship is a rematch of 2019. DePaul got the better of the Musketeers, 4-3. Xavier’s last women’s championship title was 2016, when XU defeated DPU 4-2. The Musketeers and Blue Demons also squared off in 2014. DePaul won 4-0. Each time Xavier has appeared in a championship match, it was against DePaul. DePaul has won the final bout four of the last six years. Monday is DePaul’s seventh appearance in the championship match.
 
St. John’s is the defending men’s champion. The Red Storm has also won it all four times in the past six year. DePaul has never won a men’s title. The Blue Demons were runners up in 2018 and 2014. St. John’s and DePaul met in the 2014 championship match. The Red Storm won 4-1. DePaul was also runner up in 2009. St. John’s has appeared in the championship match 16 times since 1979. St. John’s has won it all in 1980, 1991, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
