Four Teams Share Season’s Final Set Of #BIGEASTwlax Weekly Awards

UConn, Denver, Georgetown and Marquette earn final certificates of 2021.

BIG EAST Attacker Of The Week
Kyra Place, UConn, So., A            
Place tied for the BIG EAST lead in goals last week with nine as the Huskies earned a pivotal sweep of Georgetown to secure second place in the BIG EAST standings and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP. Place was clutch in both games, scoring the game winner in both contests, including Friday’s dramatic 15-14 overtime decision. Place scored the game winner with 12 seconds left in the first overtime frame. She was also credited with the game winner in Sunday’s 16-12 victory. The sophomore added three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover over the weekend.

BIG EAST Midfielder Of The Week
Mackenzie Wallevand, Denver, Sr., M
Wallevand helped put the cherry on top of a second straight undefeated BIG EAST campaign for the Pioneers with eight points, two ground balls and a caused turnover in a two-game sweep of Villanova. The senior began with five goals in Friday’s 18-10 victory before adding a goal and two assists, along with two ground balls and a caused turnover in Sunday’s 19-9 win. The Pioneers finished BIG EAST play 10-0, securing its second straight regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

BIG EAST Defensive Player Of The Week
Sophia Leva, Marquette, Sr., GK
Leva posted the BIG EAST’s top save percentage and goals against average in a 2-0 weekend for the Golden Eagles. Against Butler, the senior goalkeeper surrendered just 7.22 goals per game while saving .600 of the shots faced. She registered 18 saves on the weekend, including 10 in Sunday’s season finale win over the Bulldogs. The wins pushed Marquette into a tie for fourth place in the BIG EAST standings.

BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week
Emma Driggs, Georgetown, Fr., M
The draw control specialist was effective at UConn over the weekend, totaling 26 draws over the two-game span. She began with 12 against the Huskies on Friday and followed with 14 on Sunday, the two highest DC totals by any BIG EAST player this weekend. Over 10 BIG EAST contests this season, the rookie averaged 5.00 draw controls per game to rank fourth among all league players.

Megan Menzuber, Marquette, R-Sr., A – 10 points off seven goals and three assists in a 2-0 weekend against Butler; added four ground balls and two caused turnovers
Hannah Liddy, Denver, Sr., A – back-to-back six-assist showings against Villanova, while adding a goal against the Wildcats too to finish the weekend with a BIG EAST-best 13 points; committed just one turnover all weekend
Ariana Kline, UConn, So., D – combined for seven ground balls, eight draw controls and five caused turnovers in pivotal weekend sweep of Georgetown – five CTs were second-highest total in the BIG EAST last week
