Women’s Combined Results
CAYCE, S.C. – No. 1 seed Xavier won the women’s tennis championship bout, 4-1 over No. 2 seed DePaul on Monday afternoon at the 2021 BIG EAST Tennis Championships Presented by JEEP. Musketeer sophomore Anna Roggenburk earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
It was the second tennis championship title for Xavier. The Musketeers also won it all against DePaul, 4-2 in 2016. XU also finished as runner-up in 2014 and 2019.
The Musketeers improved to 17-3 on the season and will represent the BIG EAST as the automatic qualifier at the 2021 NCAA Tennis Championships, which will be held at the U.S. Tennis Association National Campus in Orland, Fla, starting on Sunday, May 16. The NCAA selection show will stream live on ncaa.com at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, May 3.
Xavier won the doubles point, the team of Kaitlin Ruether and Kat Lyman won the first match, 6-2 and Ahmeir Kyle and Emily Thomas clinched the point also with the 6-2 win. In singles play, MOP Roggenburk earned the first point to give Xavier a 2-0 advantage. Roggenburk defeated DePaul’s Lenka Antonijevic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 3. Roggenburk’s doubles partner, Imani Graham, got it done on court No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-3 over DePaul’s Alina Kuzmenkova. DePaul’s Morija Jovicic cut Xavier’s lead to 3-1 as she defeated XU’s Ruether, 6-3, 6-3. Lyman, Ruether’s doubles partner, clinched the title for Xavier as she came back to win 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2. That first set included a 63-shot tiebreaking rally.
The DePaul women fell to 11-5 on the season. In 2019, the Blue Demons were the champions of the title, while Xavier was runner-up.
