OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton won its sixth BIG EAST Championship in eight years on Saturday afternoon as the Bluejays defeated Marquette 3-1 at D.J. Sokol Arena in the final of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship Presented by JEEP.
With the win, Creighton earns the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on ESPNU at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Scores of the match were 18-25, 25-19, 31-29, 25-22.
Creighton senior middle blocker Naomi Hickman was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Hickman finished with 12 kills and five blocks on .579 hitting in the title tilt.
Joining Hickman on the all-tournament team from Creighton were her teammates Annika Welty and Kiara Reinhardt. From Marquette, Savannah Rennie and Hope Werch were named all-tournament. St. John’s Erfrosini Alexakou and Connecticut’s Genna Florig also earned all-tourney accolades.
After Marquette (10-4) took the opening frame, 25-18, it allowed Creighton to use a 9-1 run to close the second set, 25-19. Marquette also led 22-16 in the third before an 8-2 Bluejay run to tie the frame at 24. The squads traded leads before Creighton claimed the third, 31-29, for the match lead. Marquette threatened with seven set points, but, Creighton finished on a 3-0 run to take the set 31-29 and take the match lead. Creighton (12-3) closed out the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set for its sixth BIG EAST title.
