Villanova Leads After Day 1 Of Swimming & Diving Championships

GENEVA, Ohio  – After the first day of action at the 2021 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships Presented by JEEP, both the Villanova men and women are at the top of the leaderboards. The Villanova women have 77 points, with second-place Xavier recording 69 points. On the men’s side the Wildcats have tallied 102 points with Providence second with 77.
 
Villanova won both relay events of the evening, however the 200-yard relay came down to a tie. The Wildcats 200-yard medley team of Millicent Routledge, Rayann Jaryszak, Kelly Montesi and Perri Stahl with a time of 1:41.74. The Xavier squad of Brook Atkins, Lydia Schaeffer, Lorelei Gaertner and Kelli Fischer also finished with the same time.  Both teams earned 37 points for their respective squads.
 
The Wildcats won the 800 freestyle relay at 7:19.35. Routledge, Abbey Berloco, Nicole Welch and Montesi earned 40 points for the women’s team score.
 
Seton Hall won the men’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.39. The Pirates relay team consisted of Ross Pantano, Thomas Staes, Liam Cosgrove and Thomas Minar. Xavier won the 800 free relay behind Benjamin Quon, Jonathan Bernard, Ethan Wing and Andrew Martin with a time of 6:39.64.

The Villanova men scored two divers in the 3-meter event, earning 36 points. Michael Ackert won the event with a point total of 604.85.
 
Coming up at the pool on Thursday are prelims for the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and 50-yard freestyle. Scoring events for Thursday include the 1-meter diving finals and the 200-yard freestyle relays.
