NEW YORK -- The BIG EAST men’s soccer regular season will conclude Saturday with two conference matches: Creighton at Butler and Georgetown at St. John’s. The home site of the BIG EAST Championship is on the table as the field is set already. Georgetown, Seton Hall, Marquette and Creighton have all mathematically earned a spot in the upcoming championship.
Butler will host Creighton at 11:30 a.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network Presented by SoFi. Shawn Sullivan will be on the call at Varsity Field in Indianapolis. Butler is coming off a 1-0 OT win at Xavier on April 3. Creighton defeated DePaul 4-3 on April 2 to lock up a playoff berth. In the previous meeting between these two teams, Creighton defeated Butler, 4-2 (March 17).
Georgetown and St. John’s will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network with Spero Dedes and Charlie Davies on the call. The Hoyas, ranked second nationally, are playing for a chance to host the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship. A win or a draw against St. John’s guarantees the Hoyas the highest overall winning percentage in the league standings, and host rights for the fourth consecutive year. Georgetown defeated UConn 5-1 on Saturday. St. John’s has not seen game action since March 20. The Red Storm’s last outing resulted in a 1-0 win over UConn. In the previous meeting between these two teams, Georgetown won, 1-0 (March 13).
Currently, the BIG EAST standings have No. 2 Georgetown at the top of the East Division with a 6-0-2 record and a .875 winning percentage. Seton Hall, ranked ninth nationally by the United Soccer Coaches, the Pirates highest ranking in more than 30 years, is in second at 5-1-2 (.750). Providence is third (3-3-1, .500), St. John’s is fourth (3-4, .429), Villanova is fifth (2-5, .286) and UConn is sixth (0-6-1, .071).
In the Midwest Division, Marquette, ranked 17th nationally, is at the top with a 5-1-1 record and a .786 winning percentage. Should Georgetown lose to St. John’s, the Golden Eagles would be the host site of the BIG EAST Championship. Creighton is in second at 5-1, .714. Butler is third with a winning percentage of .571 and a 3-2-2 record. DePaul finishes 2-5 (.286) and Xavier 0-5-1 (.083).
Since last Saturday, eight conference matches were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
