Player of the Week
Alan Roden, Creighton, RS-Fr., OF (Middleton, Wis.)
Creighton freshman outfielder Alan Roden was dominant in the Bluejays’ two games with Butler on Saturday, hitting .714 (5-for-7) with two home runs, five RBI, five runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. He posted 1.571 slugging percentage and a .778 on-base percentage. In Creighton’s 11-10 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, Roden went 2-for-3 scoring twice and knocking in three runs. In game two, Creighton won 8-2, and Roden went 3-for-4 scoring twice again and sending in four. In the field he was responsible for four total outs. He played left field and right field in the two-game shortened series. Sunday’s doubleheader was washed out due to rain in Indiana. Creighton leads the current BIG EAST standings with an 11-2 record. The Bluejays are 19-9 overall.
Pitcher of the Week
Tyler Arella, Villanova, Sr., LHP (East Northport, N.Y.)
Villanova senior lefty Tyler Arella pitched a career-high eight innings in a 4-0 win over Georgetown in the middle game of a three-game series, helping the Wildcats to their second consecutive league series win. Arella used 117 pitches to strikeout eight and allow just three hits and a walk. All three hits were singles. He lowered his season ERA to 3.40. For 2021, he has held BIG EAST batters to a .248 average with 33 strikeouts in 34.0 innings pitched.
Honor Roll
Pat Gallagher, UConn
Gallagher went 7.0 innings allowing no runs to score as the Huskies defeated St. John’s 6-0 on the road. Gallagher allowed just two hits and walked one while striking out eight in 110 pitches off the mound.
Chris Winkel, UConn
Winkel batted .500 in a 3-1 weekend series win for UConn over St. John’s. Winkel went 7-for-14 with four runs scored, three RBI, a double and a home run for a .786 slugging percentage.
Tyler Shedler-McAvoy, Seton Hall
Pirate outfielder Shedler-McAvoy had five RBI and two home runs in a 2-2 series split at Xavier. He walked four times and stole a base. He also hit his second grand slam of the season in six-run seventh inning for SHU in the third game. The Pirates were leading 3-2 in the inning.
Nick Lorusso, Villanova
LoRusso batted .400 (4-for-10) with two runs scored and four RBI with a double, a walk and two sac flies in a 3-0 series sweep of Georgetown. He was the top hitter for Villanova. He had two hits, including a double and two RBI, in the series opener which was played at Citizens Bank Park on Friday afternoon.
Jared Gadd, Xavier
Gadd earned his first career save as a Musketeer as he entered the series finale against Seton hall, preserving the 7-6 win to split the series 2-2. He entered with one out in the ninth inning and struck out one, picking up the final two outs in eight pitches.
