#BIGEASTtrack Outdoor Championships Presented By JEEP Set For This Weekend

Two-day meet slated for May 14-15 at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

GENEVA, Ohio – The 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by JEEP are slated for this Friday and Saturday in Geneva, Ohio at SPIRE Institute. The BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi will once again cover the running events live starting at noon ET on each day. Matt Schumacker and Gabriella Kreuz are on the call. Field and multi-events will be taped, with highlights inserted into the two-day broadcast. For the full schedule of events, click HERE.

With last year’s event being cancelled due to COVID-19, Villanova remains the reigning champion after sweeping both the men’s and women’s in 2019 at Icahn Stadium in New York City. The Wildcat women have 12 team titles to their credit to lead all BIG EAST squads, while the Nova men boast eight crowns. Georgetown leads the all-time men’s count with 11.

The BIG EAST Championships feature 22 scored events. UConn, which is competing in the BIG EAST for the first time since 2012-13, currently boasts the season’s top marks in 13 of those on the men’s side. Villanova is the clubhouse leader on the women’s side this season with eight current No. 1 marks on the BIG EAST’s performance list. The Husky men have won the BIG EAST Championships on the men’s side four times, most recently in 2013, and twice on the women’s side, most recently in 1995. There have been three different men’s champions over the last three outdoor championships: Villanova in 2019, Marquette in 2018 and DePaul in 2017. On the women’s side, Villanova has won the last two titles after Marquette won the two prior to that.

Of the 38 individual winners at the 2019 Championships, 19 return in 2021, including Leah Anderson of St. John’s, who boasts BIG EAST season-best times in the 200 meters and 400 meters. Anderson was voted Outstanding Track Performer and High Point Performer (24 points) at the 2019 meet after sweeping the 200m and 400m before joining the winning 4x400 relay squad. The reigning men’s Outstanding Track Performer Brendan Van Voorhis of DePaul and Outstanding Field Performer Samuel Johnson of Marquette are also slated to compete in 2021. Van Voorhis also collected High Point Performer honors after tallying 23 points after titles in the 200m, 4x100 and 4x400.

A limited number of tickets will be provided to participating teams at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships. All tickets will be specifically designated for use by the members of each school's official travel party to permit families and guests of student-athletes, coaches, and team staff to attend the championship meet. There will be no public sale of tickets to this year's championship.
