GENEVA, Ohio – The UConn men and Villanova women won the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by JEEP on Saturday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The title was the fifth in the Huskies’ history and first since 2013, while the trophy was the third straight for the Wildcats and 13
th overall. UConn set meet records for event wins (12) and team points (294) in their first BIG EAST competition since 2013. Villanova won eight individual titles on the women’s side and tallied 197.50 points.
On the men’s side, Georgetown was runner-up with four event wins and 126 points, followed by third-place Villanova with three gold medals and 121 points. Butler placed fourth with 99 points, followed by Marquette in fifth (93 points), DePaul in sixth (78), Providence in seventh (30) and Xavier in eighth (eight). On the women’s side, UConn was runner-up with three event wins and 157.50 points, while St. John’s finished third with 99 points and three gold medals. With two event wins, Butler came in fourth with 96 points, followed by DePaul in fifth (90 points), Marquette in sixth (84), Georgetown in seventh (73), Providence in eighth (50) and Xavier in ninth (nine).
St. John’s Leah Anderson was voted Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet, while DePaul’s Mackenna Orie was tabbed Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet. UConn’s Joe O’Brien was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet, while teammate Jordan Torney claimed Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet honors. With 24.5 points, Anderson was also the Women’s High Point Performer, while UConn’s Safir Scott totaled 23 points to claim Men’s High Point Performer. Led by head coach Gina Procaccio, Villanova was named Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year. Led by head coach Greg Roy, UConn was voted Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year.
UConn’s O’Brien swept the 100-meter and 200-meter dash titles, snapping the tape in 10.39 and 20.96, respectively. He becomes the first to sweep the 100m and 200m in the same meet since 2016, when Villanova’s Sterling Pierce achieved the feat. St. John’s Anderson swept the 200m and 400m with winning times of 23.36 and 53.35, respectively, before joining the winning 4x100 relay, which won gold with a time of 45.64. Anderson swept the 200m and 400m for the second straight meet, becoming the first to claim both back-to-back 200m and 400m crowns since fellow St. John’s sprinter Youree Spence did so in 1985 and 1986.
UConn’s Torney won the decathlon title with the highest point total at the BIG EAST Championships since 2005. He won six of the events in the decathlon en route to totaling 7492 points. DePaul’s Orie won the shot put with the longest toss at the BIG EAST Championships since 2013, recording a heave of 15.10m. She was also a silver medalist in the discus (49.65m) and scored points with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw (50.32m).
UConn’s Scott won the 400m (46.73) with the fastest time at the conference meet since 2013, while also earning points in the long jump (second, 7.34m) and triple jump (fourth, 14.61m).
Additional men’s performances of note include Georgetown’s Jack Salisbury, who recorded the fastest 1,500m time at the BIG EAST Championships since 2009 with a winning clip of 3:44.85, while teammate Robert Brandt ran the fastest 5,000m since 2002 with a finish of 13:48.12; UConn hurdlers Terrel Williams (110m-H, 14.13) and Wellington Ventura (400m-H, 51.70) recorded the fastest times at the conference meet since 2013 and 2012, respectively; D'Andre Barriffe, Joshua Paige, Josiah Laney and Andrew Robinson scored Georgetown’s first ever 4x100 title (40.52); and Villanova’s Nicholas Ackerman, Miller Anderson, Sean Dolan and Josh Phillips recorded the fastest 4x800 gold medal time (7:25.26) since 2011.
Additional women’s performances of note include McKenna Keegan, who claimed Villanova’s sixth 800m crown in seven years with the fastest time since 2015 (2:05.86); Lydia Olivere became the fourth straight Wildcat to win the 5,000m, snapping the tape in 16:10.37; Niki Ezeh became the first 100m-hurdles champion for Butler, winning in 13.92; St. John’s 4x100 team of Onassha Rogers, Avon Samuels, Brooklyn Chestnut and Leah Anderson posted the fastest time at the conference meet since 2013 at 45.64; Georgetown won the 4x800 for the fifth time in six years as Aniella Delafosse, Sierra Dinneen, Alie Fordyce and Sami Corman clocked a 8:47.45 finish; Grayce French claimed Villanova’s first discus gold medal since 1985 with a winning toss of 52.35m; and Karmen Koch became Butler’s first heptathlon champion with a point total of 5264, most at the BIG EAST Championships since 2013.
