Friday’s opener is the first elimination game of the tournament and it will be a repeat of 2019. Xavier has knocked Seton Hall out of the championship field in both their tournament meetings meetings in 2014 and 2019. In 2019, also at Prasco Park, Xavier won 2-1. Conor Grammes and Chris Givin both plated home runs for the Musketeers, who sent Seton Hall home, 0-2. Grammes also pitched 7.0 innings as the starter, holding the Pirates scoreless on two hits and four walks. Seton Hall did plate a leadoff homer in the ninth from Casey Dana. In 2014, Xavier defeated Seton Hall, 5-3, in Brooklyn, N.Y. at MCU Park. The Pirates led 3-0 through five innings before the Musketeers rallied with five runs over the sixth and seventh. With the win, Xavier advanced to Championship Sunday and won the 2014 Tournament Title. This season, Xavier and Seton Hall split, playing back-to-back doubleheaders. Seton Hall won each opening game, 4-1 and 7-2. Both seven inning contests. Xavier won the night caps, 6-1 and 7-6. In the final game, Seton Hall rallied with three runs in the ninth, but, the Pirates couldn’t overcome Xavier’s early lead.

Why We’re Watching:
Friday’s winners’ bracket game features two teams who have not played each other during this season or the BIG EAST Championship. UConn is riding an eight-game winning streak; while Creighton has won its last three. The Huskies have won their last five BIG EAST Championship games. The Bluejays have won their last four. Both teams have won titles in their last BIG EAST Championship appearances, UConn in 2013 and Creighton in 2019. The two teams were scheduled to play April 16-18 in Omaha, Neb., but the series was canceled due to COVID protocols. UConn head coach Jim Penders is 18-10 overall in BIG EAST championship appearances. Creighton skipper Ed Servais is 11-7. Creighton defeated Seton Hall, 8-7, in the first game of the 2021 championship. UConn outrun Xavier, 11-1 in game two.
