WASHINGTON - Junior Maya Fernandez-Powell put the Hoyas on the board first, but after a TCU equalizer with 15 minutes to play in regulation, the Horned Frogs would advance on penalty kicks following a lengthy weather delay in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 16 matchup in Cary, N.C. With the draw, Georgetown finishes its season boasting a record of 12-0-2 while TCU stands at 13-0-2 and earns a spot in the tournament's quarterfinals.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
"I have to give the kids credit for stepping up to take [the penalty kicks]. It wasn't easy––the weather delay––I had never seen anything like that before in my life! The kids were brave enough to step up and take them and you have to give them all the credit in the world. It's just unfortunate that after a game where I thought we were the better team, we couldn't quite get the second goal that would have finished the game...and [TCU] are hard to nail down for 90 minutes. I thought defensively we were fantastic and didn't give them much other than the goal. Credit to them, they move on and good luck to them in the Elite 8. It's been a fantastic ride and myself and the coaches are just so proud of these kids for all the sacrifices they made and all the hard work they put in...once the sting of the PK loss goes away, the kids will realize what a fantastic, unique year it was."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tori Hallwachs would fashion Georgetown's first opportunity of the match, striking a shot just over the crossbar after the 20-minute mark.
- Just five minutes later, senior Jenna Menta looked to tally her second goal in as many games with an effort that forced TCU goalkeeper Emily Alvarado into action.
- With 15 minutes to play in the first half, a quick Georgetown throw to Menta gave her a chance to attack the Horned Frogs net; the forward received the ball just outside the TCU penalty area and drove a shot against Alvarado's crossbar, with Fernandez-Powell positioned in the right place to tap in the rebound to give GU a 1-0 advantage.
- Both teams would trade scoring opportunities, but neither could capitalize as the Blue & Gray went into the halftime break with a one-goal advantage.
- The resumption of the second half saw Georgetown push for a second goal, with senior Grace Nguyen and Fernandez-Powell creating chances around the TCU penalty area.
- With under 20 minutes to play, Gia Vicari sent a shot towards the top left of Alvarado's net, but the TCU keeper was once again equal to the effort.
- Five minutes later, TCU would equalize courtesy of a Yazmeen Ryan pass to sophomore midfielder Michelle Slater, leveling the game at one goal apiece.
- Both teams would remain tied after 90 minutes, forcing the match into overtime.
- After a first overtime period which saw neither team attempt a shot, Georgetown registered five in the second period but was unable to convert and the game would enter penalty kicks.
- Goal scorer Fernandez-Powell would be the first to step up for Georgetown, cooly converting her spot kick.
- Due to heavy thunderstorms in the surrounding area, the match was halted for a 30-minute weather delay.
- Once the shootout resumed, Alvarado made key saves to ensure TCU would advance to the quarterfinals.
