NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Conference has announced the names of more than 3,000 student-athletes who have been selected to the 2020-21 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST’s 11 member schools and five affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
There are 3,075 honorees for the 2020-21 academic year. Georgetown led the way with 408 student-athletes honored with Villanova having the second most with 378. UConn had 288 student-athletes receiving certificates, rounding out the top three institutions. Affiliate student-athletes made up 175 of the honorees.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIG EAST Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships were not held this season. Additionally, Georgetown did not compete in certain Olympic sport seasons. It was important to the BIG EAST Academic Awards Committee to continue to acknowledge the academic accomplishments of these student-athletes.
