Liberty and UConn BIG EAST Field Hockey Showdown Set for Sunday

LYNCHBURG, VA – The 2025 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by JEEP concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET when No. 2 seed UConn faces No. 1 seed Liberty at Liberty Field Hockey Field in Lynchburg, Va. The title game will be streamed on ESPN+. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. 

In the semifinals on Friday, the Lady Flames topped No. 4 seed Villanova 3-1, and the Huskies took down No. 3 seed Old Dominion 4-1. 

No. 7-ranked Liberty is appearing in the BIG EAST title match for the seventh time since joining the conference in 2016. The Lady Flames won back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022. Liberty (16-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) is led by BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Dara Semmartin, who leads the conference with 0.889 assists per game and earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors five times this season. She leads the team in points (28), goals (6), and assists (16). Freshman Diane Saint Martin, named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, has played in every game this season and ranks third in the conference in save percentage (.762) and goals-against average (0.833). Head coach Nikki Parsley-Blocker and her staff were recognized as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.

No. 20-ranked UConn looks to defend its BIG EAST title from last season. The Huskies (11-7, 6-1 BIG EAST) are led by senior midfielder Sol Simone, the BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year for the second straight season. Simone leads UConn with 17 points and ranks second in the conference with 0.706 assists per game. Goalkeeper Natalie McKenna, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, ranks third in the league with 4.56 saves per game and second in save percentage (.766). Pien Prins, who scored twice in UConn’s semifinal win over Old Dominion, ranks second on the team with 15 points on seven goals and one assist.

When the teams met during the regular season, Liberty won 1-0. The last time the Lady Flames and Huskies met in the BIG EAST Championship title match was in 2021 when Liberty won 1-0. UConn leads the all-time series 10-7
