LYNCHBURG, VA. – The No. 1 seed Liberty Lady Flames added another BIG EAST field hockey title to their record book.
The Lady Flames (17-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) secured a 2-1 overtime win over No. 2 seed UConn (12-8, 5-2 BIG EAST) at Liberty Field Hockey Field in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, presented by JEEP.
No. 7-ranked Liberty earns the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. They will learn their tournament destination during the NCAA Championship selection show at 10 p.m. tonight on NCAA.com.
Liberty opened the scoring in the first quarter with a goal by Morena Giacosa at 14:36. UConn’s Zita Grigoliet responded with the equalizer in the second quarter to tie the game 1-1.
The score remained tied through the third and fourth quarters, forcing the game into overtime. UConn outshot Liberty 11-1 in the second half.
In overtime, Lou Combrinck netted the game-winning goal at 62:29 to secure the title for the Flames.
Liberty forward Combrinck was named the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player, totaling three points over the weekend with an assist in the semifinals and the overtime game-winner in the title match.
