Louisville sophomore Anna Karin Ljungstrom was named BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Week and Marquette senior Kelly Kretz was named BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week for the week ending March 15, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Ljungstrom earned the first BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Week award of the 2011 season after finishing in a tie for first at the LSU Golf Classic on March 11-13 at the University Club Golf Course in Baton Rouge, La. Ljungstrom shot a spring season-low 69 in the final round to tie Duke's Lindy Duncan for the lead. Duncan, the No. 3 ranked women's golfer in the country according to Golfweek, defeated Ljungstrom on the third playoff hole. The sophomore finished with a 2-over par 218, firing rounds of 75, 74 and 69. The Cardinals finished 10th in the 21 team field that included 19 ranked teams.
Kretz earned his first career BIG EAST Men's Golfer of the Week honor after finishing in a tie for 14th at the Rio Pinar Invitational at the Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla. Kretz shot rounds of 76-67-72 to finish one-under (215) for the tournament. His 14th-place finish was tops among the 10 BIG EAST individual competitors. His 67 in the second round was the lowest of his Marquette career, as he helped the Golden Eagles to a 14th-place finish.
The next BIG EAST Golfer of the Week release will be on March 23.
