BIG EAST Golf Weekly Notebook - April 7

Providence, R.I. - The BIG EAST golf season is in its final week of regular-season play as the teams get ready for the 2011 BIG EAST Golf Championships. The 2011 BIG EAST Golf Championships will be held at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort April 16-19 in Palm Harbor, Fla. Nine of the men's teams hit the links this weekend in preparation for the championship. Where they will be this week... Men Bluegrass Invitational April 9-10 (Lexington, Ky.): Cincinnati New England Division I Championships April 9-10 (Middletown, R.I.): Connecticut Princeton Invitational April 9-10 (Princeton, N.J.): Georgetown, Rutgers Irish Creek Classic April 9-10 (Charlotte, N.C.): Louisville Hoosier Invitational April 8-10 (Bloomington, Ind.): Marquette Battle at the Warren April 12 (Notre Dame, Ind.): Notre Dame River Landing Intercollegiate April 8-9 (Wallace, N.C.): St. John's, Seton Hall Idle: DePaul, Villanova Women Brown Invitational April 10-11 (Barrington, R.I.): St. John's Idle: Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Seton Hall Men's Notes Cincinnati: Cincinnati finished eighth at the Mizzou Intercollegiate on April 4-5. All five of UC's golfers finished within nine shots of one another and the top four finishers all shot between 235 and 237. Sophomore Zack Bates was the top-finisher, posting rounds of 88-73-74=235 to finish tied for 30th. The Bearcats compete at the Bluegrass Invitational hosted by Kentucky on April 9-10 in Lexington, Ky. Connecticut: The Huskies did not compete last week. In the team's last tournament, Connecticut placed 14th at the FAU Spring Break Invitational at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. Junior Matthew Dziubina was the top finisher, placing 24th with a three-round score of 220 (+4). The Huskies will compete at the New England Division I Championships hosted by Providence College. The event will take place at Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I., on April 9-10. DePaul: The Blue Demons placed three golfers in the top 20 at the Mizzou Intercollegiate on April 4-5 to finish in a tie for fifth at the tournament. DePaul's tie for fifth marked its best finish of the season. Maximillian Mayer led the team in a tie for 16th, carding rounds of 78-79-75=232 to notch his first career top-25 finish. Russell Budd and Ben Westley tied for 20th-place with three-round totals of 233. The Blue Demons next compete at the BIG EAST Championships April 17-19. Georgetown: Georgetown was seventh of 20 teams at the Wildcat Invitational on April 3-4. The Hoyas finished with a two-round total of 615 (+47). Senior co-captain Danny Hathway was the Hoyas' top finisher, tying for 13th with a 149 (+7). GU next competes on April 9-10 in the Princeton Invitational. Louisville: The Cardinals tied for second at the 17 team UALR/First Tee Classic held at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark. The Cardinals shot 295-293-302=890 en route to their best finish this spring during the two day event. They finished eight shots behind Missouri which shot an 882. Junior Justin Dorward captured the Cardinals' best finish of the season, placing second in the field of 93. He shot a three-round total of 214. UofL returns to action at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Charlotte, N.C., on April 9-10. Marquette: The Golden Eagles did not compete last week. In the team's last tournament, Marquette finished in a tie for eighth place at the FAU Spring Break Invitational at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. The team finished with a three-round total of 894. Senior Kelly Kretz led the way with a score of 218, including a final round score of 71 (-1). Marquette next competes in the Hoosier Invitational on April 8-10. Notre Dame: Notre Dame placed eighth at the LSU National Invitational on April 2-3. The Irish concluded the tournament with a 54-hole score of 917 (+53). Paul McNamara III led the team with a three-round total of 227 (+11) to place 19th. Notre Dame next competes at the Battle at the Warren on April 12.
