First-Place Finishes Earn Lee and Newsome BIG EAST Golf Athlete of the Week Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - St. John's junior Harin Lee and Cincinnati freshman Emerson Newsome were named BIG EAST Golf Athletes of the Week after combining for two first-place finishes on April 8-9.

 

Lee recorded her eighth career tournament win at the Hoya Women's Invitational on April 8-9 to be named BIG EAST Women's Golf Athlete of the Week. The junior shot a 215 (73-73-69) on the par-72 course at the Members Club at Four Streams. The 2011 BIG EAST Women's Golf Champion has now won three tournaments in the spring season for the second time in her career. The Red Storm finished sixth of 14 teams at the Hoya Invitational.

 

Newsome earned BIG EAST Men's Golf Athlete of the Week honors with a first-place finish at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on April 8-9. The freshman shot a 210 (67-71-72) on the par-72 course at the Old Waverly Golf Club. Newsome recorded a first-place tournament finish for Cincinnati since 2007.

 

BIG EAST Men's Golf Notebook

  •          Villanova seniors Michael Kania and Steve Skurla finished tied for second at the Yale Spring Inviational on April 6. The senior co-captains helped the Wildcats to a first-place team finish, the second team tournament win this season.
  •         USF sophomore Trey Valentine shot a 219 (70-76-73) at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate to finish tied for 23rd at the Memorial Golf Club on April 8-9.
  •         St. John's senior Pat Wilson finished tied for 11th at the Thunderbird Invitational on April 5-7. The senior topped the No. 7 and No. 17 players in the nation on the Karsten Course.
  •          The 2013 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship will take place April 28-30 at the Reunion Resort & Club in Orlando, Fla.

BIG EAST Women's Golf Notebook

  •          Louisville sophomore Emily Haas finished third at the SMU Dallas Athletic Club Invitational on April 5-7 with a score of 222 (76-75-71).

o The sophomore rallied from 18th place after the first round to record her fourth top-10 finish of the season.

o The field at the SMU Invite included 11 nationally-ranked players and seven ranked teams.

  •         The 2013 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship will take place April 21-23 at the Reunion Resort & Club in Orlando, Fla.
