Notre Dame's Weaver Named Big East Women's Golf Player, Freshman of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame freshman Lindsey Weaver, who shared the individual title and led the Irish to the team title at the Big East Championship last week, has been named as the Big East Women's Golf Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year by the league's eight head coaches.

Notre Dame coach Susan Holt, who helped the Irish to their fifth Big East championship, was recognized as Big East Coach of the Year.

Weaver becomes the first player in conference history to be named Big East Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season. She finished among the top 10 individuals in eight of her nine tournaments in the 2012-13 season, capped by a first-place showing at the Big East Championship. Weaver led all Big East players with a 72.56 stroke average and had two sub-70 rounds, including a three-under 69 on the final day of the Big East Championship to turn in a tournament-record 54-hole score of 210 (71-70-69). Weaver is the No. 14-rated player nationally in the April 30 Golfstat Cup standings.

Weaver is the first Notre Dame player to be named Big East Player of the Year. She was unanimously chosen as the Big East Freshman of the Year, following teammate Ashley Armstrong as the second straight Notre Dame winner of that award.

Holt was named Big East Coach of the Year for the third time after she earned her third Big East title in the last six years. The Irish, who are ranked No. 26 nationally by Golfstat, finished ahead of 86.6 percent of their opponents in the 2012-13 season and shattered the Big East Championship record by 15 strokes at last week's championship. The Irish finished the event six under par with a three-day total of 861 (294-285-282), bettering the old mark of 876, set by Louisville in 2009. The Irish averaged a Big East-leading 298.29 in their 10 tournaments this season.

Holt had previously been named Big East Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2011.

Weaver was one of five unanimous selections on the 11-player All-Big East team, as voted by the coaches. Notre Dame freshman Talia Campbell, who tied with Weaver for medalist honors as the Big East Championship, joined Weaver and Armstrong as unanimous picks from Notre Dame. St. John's junior Harin Lee and Louisville sophomore Emily Haas, who both registered top-five finishes at the Big East Championship, also earned all-conference votes from every head coach.
