PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville sophomore Joao De Lucca has been selected BIG EAST Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week and Notre Dame freshman Emma Reaney is the BIG EAST Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.
De Lucca recorded three top finishes, including two individual wins, while helping the Cardinals to victories over Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan in a double dual meet on Jan. 14. He posted a time of 20.61 to win the 50-yard freestyle and captured a victory in the 100 free with a time of 44.66. De Lucca also anchored the winning 200 free relay team, posting a time of 20.01 for his leg and 1:22.17 overall.
Reaney won four events and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in all four races while competing against Michigan and Northwestern at a double dual meet on Jan. 14. She logged individual victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.10), the 200 breaststroke (2:14.77) and the 400 IM (4:19.13). Reaney is now 9-0 (prelims and finals) in IM events this year. She also played a role in winning the 400 freestyle relay, swimming the anchor leg in 50.37. The team finished the event in 3:24.45.
This is Reaney's third weekly honor of the season and the first for De Lucca.
The 2011-12 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly honors will be awarded on January 24.
