PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville sophomore Raine Thompson and Notre Dame freshman Frank Dyer were named the BIG EAST Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week and BIG EAST Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, respectively, after turning in impressive performances.
Thompson posted two individual wins in the Cardinals' 211-83 victory over Cincinnati Jan. 15. She finished the 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.14 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:58.62. The sophomore also assisted in the winning 400 medley relay, which posted a pool record time of 3:45.37. She swam the butterfly leg of the race in 55.27 seconds.
Dyer brought home five first-place honors, including three individual wins at Northwestern Jan. 12 to help Notre Dame earn a pair of wins last week. In addition to recording an NCAA B-cut in the 500 free, the freshman's efforts helped steer the Irish to their first win over Northwestern in more than 20 years. In the 160-140 win over Northwestern, Dyer finished the 200 free in 1:39.75, the 100 free in 45.76 and the 500 free in 4:27.94. He also assisted in two winning relays Jan. 14 as Notre Dame defeated Cleveland State 162-81. Dyer was the anchor in both the 400 medley and the 400 free, which posted times of 3:24.13 and 3:04.56, respectively.
