PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After taking a short hiatus during the holiday season, the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving teams are back in full swing.
Cincinnati - The Bearcats traveled Gambier, Ohio, to compete in the Kenyon Quad Meet Jan. 21-22. The women's team tallied 549 points to take the top spot, beating Oakland (507), Kenyon (490) and Ashland (164). The men's squad placed fourth with 190.5 points. Oakland (672) took the top spot on the men's side, followed by Kenyon (525) and Ashland (200.5). Cincinnati is back in action Jan. 29, hosting Kentucky and Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
Connecticut - The Connecticut men's and women's teams each posted wins over Seton Hall Jan. 22 as the men won by a 176-120 count and the women were victorious by a 187-108 score. The men improve to 5-1 on the season, while the women are 4-2. The Huskies return to action Jan. 28, traveling to Bucknell for a 1 p.m. meet.
Georgetown - The Hoyas concluded their 2011 home dual meet schedule Jan. 22, defeating George Washington. The men's team earned a 161-110 win, while the women won 168-104 on Senior Day at McCarthy Pool. Georgetown is back in action Feb. 5, traveling to Maryland for a 1 p.m. meet.
Louisville - The Cardinals won 21 of 32 events to sweep intrastate rival Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., Jan. 22. Louisville hosts Indiana and Virginia Tech Jan. 28 at 5 p.m.
Notre Dame - In their last outings the Irish women's team went 0-2, losing to Northwestern 189.5-110.5 and Michigan 182-117 Jan. 15 in a double-dual meet. Despite six individual wins on the night, the Norte Dame men's squad narrowly lost to Michigan State 155.5-144.5. Both teams will host the Shamrock Invitational Jan. 28-29.
Pittsburgh - The Panthers hosted West Virginia Jan. 8. The women won 194-104, while the men fell 158-142. The men finished second against Maryland and Penn State Jan. 15, while the women came in third. The Panthers return to Trees Pool Jan. 29, hosting ACC foe Virginia. Diving begins at 11 a.m., while the swimming events are slated for a noon start. Nearly 50 Panthers have earned berths in the BIG EAST Championship. Senior Andrzej Dubiel holds top-five times in two events for the men and senior Laura Barnes leads the women with two top-10 times. Seniors Colin Forner, Zane McLain, Mallory Mullady and Morgan Speece have qualified in the diving events.
Providence - The Providence men's (1-6) and women's (0-8) teams lost to Maine Jan. 15. The men fell 185-110, while the women lost 207-84. In the meet, sophomore Sam Schlich became the 30th Friar to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship. Schlich made the `A' standard in the 50-yard free (25.46) and the `B' standard in the 200-yard free (2:02.74). Freshman Kenny Savage scored the most points for the Friars on the day, accounting for 21 points thanks to impressive performances in the freestyle and medley events. The women were led by freshman Kelly Hall. Hall scored 13 individual points and added two more with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.70). The men's team was forced to cancel its meet against Villanova Jan. 22 due to inclement weather. The women's team was not scheduled to compete this week. The Friars are back in action, weather permitting, Jan. 29 with both squads hosting Holy Cross for their final home meet of the season. The diving portion of the meet will begin at 11 a.m., while the swimming competition will start at 1 p.m.
Rutgers - Rutgers finished third of six teams with 170.5 points at the Rutgers Invitational Jan. 21-22. Minnesota led the field with 274 points, while Harvard ranked second with 250. Trailing RU was Toledo with 111.5 points, Rider with 90 and Saint Francis with 56 points. The Scarlet Knights travel to Louisville for the BIG EAST Championship next month. The diving action starts Feb. 11 and will finish Feb. 13, while the swimming meet runs from Feb. 16-19.
Seton Hall - The men's team dropped its second straight meet last week, losing to Connecticut 176-120 Jan. 22. The women also lost at Connecticut 187-108. The Pirates host Marist Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
Syracuse - Senior Kuba Kotynia represented the Orange at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals Dec. 2-4. He placed 36th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.92. The Orange return to the pool for their final home meet Feb. 4-5 against Villanova and Providence.
Villanova - The Wildcats' meet against Providence Jan. 22 was canceled due to inclement winter weather. In their last outing, the men lost to Seton Hall 178-117, while the women were won 186-111 Jan. 18. Both teams host Boston University Jan. 28.
West Virginia - The men's team defeated Maryland Jan. 22 213-87, while the women lost 202-96. The Mountaineer women's squad returns to action Jan. 29 hosting Ohio at noon. Both teams will travel to Louisville next month for the BIG EAST Championship.
