BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Notebook - Feb. 3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 2010-11 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving season is winding down as teams prepare for the BIG EAST Championships in Louisville, Ky. The diving portion will take place Feb. 11-13 with the swimming portion slated for Feb. 16-19.
Cincinnati - The men's team dropped a 255-42 decision to Virginia Tech and a 206-75 result to Kentucky Jan. 29. The women's team fell 193-106 to Virginia Tech and 176.5-107.5 to Kentucky. Virginia Tech beat Kentucky by a 197-99 margin on the men's side and a 159-135 score on the women's ledger. The Bearcats are back in action Feb. 5, traveling to Wright State.
Connecticut - The men's team beat Bucknell Jan. 28 177.5-116.5, while the women won 190-109. Junior Caitlin Gallagher won three events and three Husky men were double winners as UConn's men's and women's teams took part in the Bison Invitational Jan. 29. There was no team scoring in the event which featured UConn, host Bucknell and American. Both teams travel to Yale Feb. 5.
Georgetown - The Hoyas concluded their 2011 home dual meet schedule Jan. 22, defeating George Washington. The men's team earned a 161-110 win, while the women won 168-104 on Senior Day at McCarthy Pool. Georgetown is back in action Feb. 5, traveling to Maryland for a 1 p.m. meet.
Louisville - The Cardinal men and women beat Virginia Tech, but fell to Indiana in a double dual meet Jan. 28 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The men beat Virginia Tech 154-146, but fell to the Hoosiers 176-124. The women beat Virginia Tech 205-95, but fell to IU 181-119 in a meet designed to mimic a conference meet's competitiveness. Both teams will return to action for the BIG EAST Championship with the diving portion Feb. 11-13 and the swimming portion Feb. 16-19.
Notre Dame - While celebrating their Senior Day, the Irish (6-4) defeated Denver 250-118, while falling to Iowa 194-174, in non-conference men's swimming and diving action Jan. 29. Notre Dame women's team split its four dual meets Jan. 29 at the Rolfs Aquatic Center to end the two-day Shamrock Invitational. The women defeated Denver (253-117) and Iowa (264-104), while falling to a pair of Big Ten squads in Ohio State (197.5-166.5) and Northwestern (193.5-176.5). The Irish women host Ball State Feb. 5. Both teams travel to Louisville, Ky., for the BIG EAST Championship with the diving portion Feb. 11-13 and the swimming portion Feb. 16-19.
Pittsburgh - Pitt will honor its seniors Feb. 5 as the Panthers host dual meets against Carnegie Mellon, Clarion, Cal. U and Grove City. All swimming events will be held at Trees Pool with an 11 a.m. start, while diving events will be held at CMU at 11 a.m.
Pitt suffered losses to Virginia in its last outing. The men dropped a 159-130 decision to the Cavaliers Jan. 29. However, Adam Maczewski shaved a few hundredths of a second off his current 100-yard backstroke school record. The BIG EAST leader in the event touched the wall at 47.67 to increase his NCAA chances with a fast provisional mark.
On the women's side, Mallory Mullady shattered a record of her own on the 1M board. She bested an 11-year old score of 301.95, when she rallied a 306.15. Joanna Budzis earned two first-place finishes on the day and took second in her third individual event. She won the 200 back with a season-best 2:00.95 and was the first to the wall in the 200 individual medley. Budzis leads the Panthers in all three events. The women fell 161-131 to the Cavaliers.
Providence - The Providence College men's and women's teams both defeated Holy Cross Jan. 29. The women beat the Crusaders by a final score of 195-104, while the men won by a similar margin 192-107. In the meet, both Friar squads swept their respective freestyle events--winning the 50m, 100m, 200m, 800m and 400m relay. The Friars are back in the pool Feb. 4-5 when they travel to upstate New York to take on Syracuse.
Rutgers - Rutgers finished third of six teams with 170.5 points at the Rutgers Invitational Jan. 21-22. Minnesota led the field with 274 points, while Harvard ranked second with 250. Trailing RU was Toledo with 111.5 points, Rider with 90 and Saint Francis with 56 points. The Scarlet Knights travel to Louisville for the BIG EAST Championship next month. The diving action starts Feb. 11 and will finish Feb. 13, while the swimming meet runs from Feb. 16-19.  
Seton Hall - The men's team closed out the 2010-11 regular season with a convincing 182.5-108.5 victory over Marist Jan. 29 at the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium.  In addition, freshman Evan Forbes punched a ticket to the BIG EAST Championships, becoming the 19th men's member to qualify.The Pirate women closed out the 2010-11 season, losing to Marist 168-132 Jan. 29. Despite the loss that dropped their overall record to 8-3, the women ended the year with their highest winning percentage (.727) under current coach Ron Farina. Both teams travel to Louisville, Ky., for the BIG EAST Championship with the diving portion Feb. 11-13 and the swimming portion Feb. 16-19.
Syracuse - Senior Kuba Kotynia represented the Orange at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals Dec. 2-4. He placed 36th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.92. The Orange return to the pool for their final home meet Feb. 4-5 against Villanova and Providence.   
Villanova - The men's team fell 189-104 to Boston University Jan. 28, while the women dropped a 152-148 decision. Both teams travel to Louisville, Ky., for the BIG EAST Championship with the diving portion Feb. 11-13 and the swimming portion Feb. 16-19.
West Virginia - The men's team defeated Maryland Jan. 22 213-87, while the women lost 202-96. The Mountaineer women's squad fell to Ohio 176-122 Jan. 29. Both teams travel to Louisville, Ky., for the BIG EAST Championship with the diving portion Feb. 11-13 and the swimming portion Feb. 16-19.
