Louisville Captures Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Caryle Blondell of Louisville was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week in men's swimming and diving for the second time this season and freshman Kelsi Worrell of Louisville earned her second BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors in women's swimming and diving in the 10th weekly awards of the 2012-13 season.

 

Blondell took home two individual first-place finishes and was as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay that claimed the event against No. 6 Indiana on Feb. 2. The sophomore placed first in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 20.22 seconds and claimed the 100 freestyle in 44.31 seconds. Blondell also led the 400 freestyle relay team with a leadoff split of 43.87 as the squad set a pool record in 2:57.08, a full four seconds ahead of the field.  

 

Worrell won two individual events with NCAA provisional qualifying marks against No. 13 Indiana on Feb. 2 and was also the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay that placed second. The freshman set provisional qualifying marks in the 100 and 200 freestyles. She won the 100 in 49.78 seconds and took home the 200 in 1:47.29. As a member of the 400 freestyle relay, Worrell swam the leadoff leg in 50.39 seconds as the team placed second in 3:22.61.

 

The 2012-13 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly awards will be announced on Feb. 12.

  • Louisville and Notre Dame are ranked No. 15 and No. 19 respectively in the Jan. 30 women's CSCAA coaches' poll. The Cardinals are ranked No. 14 nationally in the men's Jan. 22 CSCAA coaches' poll.
  • Senior Hayley Edwards of Villanova won the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:02.41 against Richmond on Feb. 1.
  • Junior Frank Dyer of Notre Dame claimed three first-place finishes in the regular season finale at Northwestern, sweeping the 50 (20.45), 100 (44.71) and 200 (1:37.67) freestyles. Dyer's time in the 200 provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship.
  • Junior Joao De Lucca of Louisville has the fastest time in the nation in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:32.57. He has the second fastest mark in the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.05 and the seventh fastest time in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 19.61.
  • Blondell has the eighth fastest mark in the country in the 100 freestyle at 43.16 seconds.
  • Sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame has the fourth fastest NCAA times in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley with marks of 2:07.60 and 1:55.05 respectively. She has the seventh fastest time in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 59.38.
  • Sophomore Addison Bray of Louisville has the 10th best mark in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:55.82.
