Louisville Holds the Reins Heading into Final Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville tops both the men's and women's team leader boards with the final day of the BIG EAST Swimming Championships tomorrow at the Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on the University of Louisville campus. Five BIG EAST Championship records fell tonight, including three on the women's side and two on the men's. Day two finals action kicked off with the women's 400-yard individual medley. West Virginia's Rachael Burnett touched the wall first at 4:14.41. Villanova's Astrid Armgarth edged Louisville's Fanny Lilliestrom to claim second with a time of 4:16.33, while Lilliestrom finished in 4:17.73. In the men's 400 IM, Louisville and Seton Hall were neck-in-neck going into the last 50 yards, but SHU's Kevin Webster turned on the heat in the final stretch to hold off Carlos Almeida. Webster tapped in at 3:46.03, while Almeida posted the second-place time of 3:48.09. Notre Dame's Michael Sullivan rounded out the top three with a time of 3:50.94. The Cardinal women set their second BIG EAST Championship record of the year as Lorraine Thompson finished the women's 100-yard butterfly in 53.10, beating Rutgers' Michelle DeFreese time of 53.32 set in 2003. Second went to WVU's Amanda Nugent, who also beat the previous meet record, coming in at 53.15. She was followed by ND's Kimberly Holden with a time of 53.83. For the men, the Mountaineers' Taylor Camp took top honors in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.47, followed by UofL's Richard Collins at 48.01. The Irish's William Bass was a close third in the 100 fly, finishing in 48.26. Despite being chased by a flock of Cardinals in the women's 200-yard freestyle, Notre Dame's Kelly Ryan cruised past the rest of field with the winning time of 1:46.88. Second-place went to Louisville's Breann McDowell, who touched in at 1:48.45. She was followed by teammate Lindsey Laporte with a time of 1:48.85. On the men's side, the top two finishers in the 200 freestyle beat the BIG EAST Championship meet record of 1:35.34 set by UofL's Andrei Radzionau in 2008. Joao DeLucca touched the wall at 1:35.07, earning the second BIG EAST Championship record for the Cardinal men in 2011. The Irish's Frank Dyer came in second, while Connecticut's Karim Zayed claimed third with times of 1:36.75 and 1:37.62, respectively. Louisville's Therese Bergstrom narrowly edged ND's Samantha Maxwell in the women's 100-yard breaststroke. Bergstrom posted a time of 1:00.15, while Maxwell came in at 1:00.60. Third place went to the Wildcats' Erin Malone, finishing in 1:01.38. In the men's 100 breaststroke, the UofL men picked up their second-straight win as Kameron Chastain took top honors with a time of 53.45. He was followed by ND's Christopher Johnson, who touched at 53.75. The Cards also snagged the bronze as Kenneth Crapse recorded a time of 54.08. Notre Dame's Kimberly Holden sailed past the rest of the field in the women's 100-yard backstroke to claim the championship title with a record-setting time of 52.99. The previous record of 53.11 was set by RU's Catherine Whetstone in 2009. Holden was followed by a pair of Cardinals as Eszter Povazsay and Kristina Brandenburg posted times of 53.82 and 53.97, respectively. The pack continued to chase Louisville in the men's 100 backstroke. UofL's Brendon Andrews held off the rest of the fleet, claiming the 2011 BIG EAST title with a time of 46.94. Second place went to Adam Maczewski of Pitt, who finished in 47.50. He was followed by the Irish's Petar Petrovic, touching in 47.95. The third day of BIG EAST Championship swimming action wrapped up with the men's and women's 400-yard medley relay. The night's third women's BIG EAST Championship record was broken as Notre Dame edged Louisville with times of 3:35.89 and 3:37.29, respectively. The Irish team of Holden, Maxwell, Kathryn Casey and Ryan beat the previous meet record that was set by Notre Dame in 2009. In the men's 400 medley relay, the Cardinal men collected their third win of the night as the foursome of Andrews, Chastain, Pedro Oliveira and DeLucca slid past West Virginia. Louisville posted a winning time of 3:12.31, while WVU finished in 3:13.63. The Louisville women hold a commanding lead going into the final day of the BIG EAST Championship with 623.50 points, followed by the Irish with 430.50. The Notre Dame men gained ground tonight in the team standings, sitting at 570.50 points compared to UofL's 591. BIG EAST Championship swimming action wraps up tomorrow with the men's and women's 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
