Notre Dame and Louisville atop the Standings after Day Two of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - There was a new standings leader in women's swimming and diving after day two of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Louisville pulled ahead of Notre Dame in the women's standings with 332 points while the Fighting Irish remained the leader in the men's standing with 367 points.

 

Villanova kicked off the first event of the night with first and second-place finishes in the women's 500-yard freestyle. Senior Hayley Edwards of Villanova won a full two seconds ahead of teammate, senior Roxanne Tammadge. Edwards claimed first-place with a time of 4:43.41 while Tammadge finished in 4:45.77. Finishing seconds after was senior Kelsey Herbst of Pittsburgh with a mark of 4:45.82 to take third-place.

 

In the men's 500 free, Notre Dame swept the competition with the top-3 finishes. Reigning champion, junior Frank Dyer, won the event for the third straight season with a time of 4:20.53. Claiming second-place was sophomore Kevin Hughes in 4:23.67 and classmate Brennan Jacobsen took third in 4:23.71. The Fighting Irish had five of the top-8 finishes in the event.

 

The women's 200 individual medley saw another record broken when defending champion, sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame, broke the meet record she set in 2012 (1:56.42) with a time of 1:56.37. Second-place belonged to sophomore Tanja Kylliainen of Louisville with a time of 1:57.53 while teammate Erica Belcher finished third in 1:59.61.

 

Notre Dame continued its early dominance in event 11. The Fighting Irish swept the top-3 finishes in the men's 200 IM and took five of the top-8 spots. Sophomore Zachary Stephens won in 1:45.41, edging defending champion senior William Bass by seconds. Bass finished in 1:45.78 while junior Colin Babcock took third with a mark of 1:46.40.

 

Freshman Kelsi Worrell of Louisville won the women's 50 free with a time of 22.62. Taking second in the event was sophomore Chinyere Pigot of Connecticut and placing third was Kristina Brandenburg of Louisville with times of 22.99 and 23.03 respectively. The Cardinals claimed four of the top-6 finishes.

 

Notre Dame took another championship in the men's 50 free. Junior Frank Dyer of Notre Dame touched the wall in 19.62 to narrowly defeat junior Joao De Lucca of Lousiville. De Lucca placed in 19.73 and edged out teammate Caryle Blondell (19.97). The Cardinals placed four of the top-6 finishes in the men's event as well as the women's. Dyer became the first BIG EAST swimmer to win both the 50 and 500-yard freestyles.

 

The women's 1-meter dive featured a new champion when sophomore Allison Casareto of Notre Dame tallied 311.80 points to defeat the reigning champion, senior Danielle Cecco of Connecticut. Cecco took second in the event with 307.25 points while senior Jennifer Chiang of Notre Dame placed third with a score of 297.60.

 

In event 14, Louisville claimed the women's 200 free relay. The team of Kelsi Worrell, Kristina Brandenburg, Mary Mittel and Grite Apanaviciute finished in 1:30.93. Worrell, the winner of the 50 free, gave the Cardinals an early lead with a 22.98 second split in the first leg. Notre Dame took second in the event with a time of 1:31.75 and Cincinnati placed third in 1:33.44.

 

The final event of the night featured another Louisville win as the Cardinals finished in 1:18.37. The team of Caryle Blondell, Joao De Lucca, Kameron Chastain and Samuel Hoekstra was led by De Lucca's split of 19.29 seconds, the fastest split in the event. Second-place was awarded to Notre Dame with a time of 1:18.91 and Pittsburgh finished third in 1:20.55.

 

The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships resumes tomorrow, March 1 beginning at 10 a.m. The prelims and consols for the men's 3-meter dive as well as the prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay will take place in the morning session with the finals set for 6 p.m.
