Records Shatter on Day Three of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The third day of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships featured six meet records at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. Notre Dame remains in first-place in the men's standings with 703 points while Louisville still holds the top spot in the women's standings with 592 points.

 

Friday's finals began with a record shattering performance from Tanja Kyllianen of Louisville in the women's 400-yard individual medley. The sophomore beat the previous record (4:10.40) she set last season by a full three seconds, finishing in 4:07.29. The Cardinals swept the event with sophomore Abigail Chin claiming second in 4:13.24 and classmate Victoria Mitchell taking third with a mark of 4:16.76.

 

Louisville also claimed the championship in the men's 400 IM when freshman Nolan Tesone edged sophomore William Franz of Connecticut. Tesone took the event in 3:48.90 while Franz finished shortly after in 3:49.76. Placing third was sophomore Matthew DeBlasio of Notre Dame with a time of 3:50.95.

 

Kelsi Worrell of Louisville tied a meet record in the 100 butterfly. The freshman won her second BIG EAST Championship with a time of 51.55. Senior Kimberly Holden of Notre Dame finished shortly after in 52.57 and junior Mary Mittel of Louisville placed in third with a time of 54.61. Louisville had three of the top-four finishes in the event.

 

In the men's 100 butterfly, sophomore Kourosh Ahani gave Pittsburgh its first men's championship of the evening. Ahani fell behind after the first split but an impressive finish claimed first-place in 46.74, narrowly defeating senior William Bass of Notre Dame. Bass, the 2012 champion, placed second in 47.38. Sophomore Jonathan Williamson of Notre Dame took third with a time of 47.93.

 

Event 21 featured another Louisville win as junior Breann McDowell claimed the women's 200 free in 1:46.77. Pittsburgh took second and third place finishes from sophomore Danielle des Tombe and senior Kelsey Herbst with times of 1:48.54 and 1:48.74 respectively.

 

Junior Joao De Lucca of Louisville claimed his third straight 200 free championship by breaking the record he set last year (1:33.44) with a time of 1:33.11. Junior Frank Dyer of Notre Dame finished second overall with a time of 1:34.70 and senior Alex Burtch of Louisville took third in 1:36.39.

 

Event 23 featured another new BIG EAST Championship record as sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame finished in 58.84 to claim her second straight 100 breaststroke title. She finished just under two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, senior Erin Malone of Villanova. Malone swam in 1:00.77 while junior Christen McDonough of Notre Dame placed third in 1:01.18.

 

Notre Dame swept the top-three finishes in the men's 100 breaststroke as senior Christopher Johnson of Notre Dame set a meet record with a time of 52.95. Sophomore Zachary Stephens and classmate Cameron Miller took second and third with marks of 53.17 and 53.53 respectively.

 

In the women's 100 backstroke, senior Kim Holden of Notre Dame won her third championship in four years with a time of 53.34. She edged teammate Kelly Ryan who took second in 53.53 while junior Kristina Brandenburg of Louisville touched the wall in 53.95 to place third.

 

Pittsburgh claimed the men's 100 backstroke as senior Adam Maczewski touched the wall in 47.09 to finish ahead of sophomore Aaron Young of Louisville. Young took second in 48.75 while freshman Bogac Ayhan of Notre Dame finished third in 48.80.

 

The Panthers won another championship in event 26 when junior Aaron Snyder of Pittsburgh defeated sophomore Michael Kreft of Notre Dame by 0.10 points. Snyder won the event with 338.30 points while Kreft fell just short with 338.20. Coming in third was freshman John Brice of Connecticut with 328.35 points.

 

Notre Dame set another record in the women's 400 medley relay when the team of Kelly Ryan, Emma Reaney, Kimberly Holden and Catherine Galletti finished in 3:34.86. Finishing second was Louisville in 3:36.39 and Rutgers placed third with a mark of 3:40.52.

 

For the sixth straight year, Louisville won the men's 400 medley relay championship. The team of Aaron Young, Addison Bray, Albert Lloyd and Joao De Lucca won in 3:11.62. Trailing after 300-yards, De Lucca pulled away with splits of 19.66 and 41.93 to anchor the Cardinals.

 

The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships resumes tomorrow, March 2 beginning at 10 a.m. The prelims and consols for the men's 3-meter dive as well as the prelims for the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay will take place in the morning session with the finals set for 6 p.m. Tomorrow is the final day of the BIG EAST Championships.
