Notre Dame and Louisville Win 2013 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships came to a conclusion on Saturday, naming the Notre Dame men's team and Louisville women's team the 2013 BIG EAST Champions. The Fighting Irish reclaimed their title with 991 points while the Cardinals won their third straight championship with 895 points.  Notre Dame was second in the women's competition and Louisville was second in the men's competition.  The Championships were held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.

 

Notre Dame men won their sixth BIG EAST title and Louisville was named runner-up with 851.50 points. The Louisville women won their third title while the Fighting Irish finished as runner-up for the third straight year with 772 points.

 

The first event of the night was the 1,650-yard women's freestyle. Senior Hayley Edwards of Villanova won with a mark of 6:14.98, the second fastest time in BIG EAST Championship finals history. Finishing in second was senior Kelsey Herbst of Pittsburgh with a time of 16:20.78 and senior Roxanne Tammadge of Villanova placed third in 16:29.79. Edwards was also the 500 free champion.

 

In the men's 1,650 free, freshman Bryan Draganosky of Louisville set a meet record time of 15:05.45. The freshman won a full 11 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Senior Paul Quincy of Georgetown claimed silver with a time of 15:16.90 while sophomore John Nappi of Notre Dame took bronze in 15:21.63.

 

The women's 200 backstroke featured the top-two times in BIG EAST Championship history. Reigning champion Kelly Ryan of Notre Dame set a meet record with a time of 1:53.86 while teammate Kimberly Holden finished in 1:54.33 to take second-place. Claiming third overall was senior Eszter Povazsay of Louisville with a time of 1:56.27.

 

Louisville claimed first and second-place in the men's 200 backstroke. Junior Juan Lopez finished first in 1:44.64 and teammate Evan Noble took second in 1:44.71. Rounding out the top-three was sophomore William Franz of Connecticut with a mark of 1:45.78.

 

In the women's 100 free, the Cardinals swept the top-three finishes. Winning the event was freshman Kelsi Worrell who placed in 49.02. Teammates Breann McDowell and Kristina Brandenburg placed second and third respectively with times of 49.42 and 49.65.

 

Louisville also took the top-three spots in the men's 100 free. Reigning champion Joao De Lucca set a new meet record, beating his time from last season (42.67) with a mark of 42.43. Teammate Caryle Blondell finished in 43.48 to take second and senior Samuel Hoekstra placed third with a mark of 43.89.

 

Sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame added her third individual BIG EAST Championship when she finished first in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore claimed the event with a time of 2:08.24. Senior Erin Malone of Villanova placed second with a mark of 2:11.25 and reigning champion Gisselle Kohoyda of Louisville claimed third-place in 2:12.20.

 

The men's 200 breaststroke featured another Notre Dame win as sophomore Zachary Stephens won his second BIG EAST title with a mark of 1:55.21. Sophomore Addison Bray of Louisville finished shortly after in 1:55.74 while sophomore Cameron Miller of Notre Dame took third in 1:56.24.

 

Louisville captured another championship in the women's 200 butterfly when sophomore Tanja Kylliainen of Louisville finished in 1:55.75. Coming in second-place was sophomore Bridget Casey of Notre Dame with a time of 1:57.49 while freshman Devon Bibault of Louisville took third in 1:58.00.

 

In the men's 200 fly, sophomore Jonathan Williamson of Notre Dame reclaimed his title and fell just short of setting a meet record (1:43.51) with a first-place finish mark of 1:43.94. Teammate William Bass placed second overall when he touched the wall in 1:45.27 and sophomore Jonathan Lierley of Pittsburgh placed third with a time of 1:47.16.

 

The men's platform diving champion, freshman Sean Piner of Louisville, won the event in convincing fashion with 302.55 points. The runner-up, sophomore Ted Wagner of Notre Dame, took second with 258.90 points and senior Nikolas Sachs, the 1-meter dive champion, placed third with 256.65 points.

 

Junior Nicole Scott of Rutgers won the women's platform championship with a total of 273.25 points. Placing second in the event was senior Hannah Gadd of Louisville with 238.95 points and freshman Lindsey Streepey of Notre Dame finished third with 228.40 points.

 

In the final women's event of the BIG EAST Championships, Louisville captured the gold in the 400 free relay with a new meet record. The team of Kelsi Worrell, Kristina Brandenburg, Grite Apanaviciute and Breann McDowell placed first with a time of 3:16.89. Finishing second was Notre Dame in 3:19.37 and Villanova placed third with a mark of 3:22.46.

 

The final event of the night saw another BIG EAST record shattered when Louisville narrowly beat its time from last year (2:52.58) with a first-place mark of 2:52.38. The Cardinals, made up of Caryle Blondell, Joao De Lucca, Alex Burtch and Samuel Hoekstra defeated Notre Dame by a full two seconds. The Fighting Irish took second with a time of 2:54.43 while Pittsburgh claimed third in 2:57.57.

 

There were a total of 13 meet records set at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships.
