Louisville and Notre Dame Finish 11th and 36th Respectively at NCAA Championships


Louisville and Notre Dame finished 11th and 36th respectively at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.


The Cardinals finished 11th overall in the 40-team field with 93 points and the Fighting Irish placed 36th with seven points.


Louisville's 200 freestyle relay squad of junior Joao De Lucca, sophomore Caryle Blondell, junior Kameron Chastain and senior Sam Hoekstra placed 10th with a time of 1:17.94.


The Cardinal's 800 freestyle relay team finished 14th overall with a mark of 6:23.84. The team consisted of senior Alex Burtch, De Lucca, junior Albert Lloyd and Hoekstra. Notre Dame finished shortly after in 6:25.32 to capture 16th place. The team was made up of junior Frank Dyer, sophomore Kevin Hughes, senior John McGinley and senior William Bass.


De Lucca, the national champion in the 200 freestyle (1:31.51), also took third in the 100 free in 42.27 and finished 13th in the 50 free with a mark of 19.72.


Sophomore Jon Williams of Notre Dame placed 13th in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 1:44.18 and teammate Zach Stephens finished 16th overall in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:55.43.


In the final event of the meet, Louisville placed fourth overall in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:50.98. The team consisted of Blondell, De Lucca, Burtch and Hoekstra.
