PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville junior Alex Burtch was named Men's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week and Connecticut senior Caitlin Gallagher was named Women's BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.
Burtch led the Cardinals to a 185-115 victory over Pittsburgh on Nov. 4 with three individual first-place finishes and a relay win. He cruised to a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.98, more than two seconds ahead of the field. Burtch garnered his second win with a 46.12 finish in the 100 free, and another in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:54.82. On top of his individual accomplishments, Burtch anchored the 200 free relay team to victory with a split time of 20.50.
Gallagher captured four first-place finishes in a 182.5-109.5 victory over Army on Nov. 5. She led all competitors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.75 and finished the 200 breast in 2:19.11. The senior competed on the winning medley relay team, swimming the breaststroke leg in a time of 29.01. Gallagher also finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.78.
The 2011-12 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly awards will be given out on Nov. 15.
