Louisville Captures Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Joao De Lucca of Louisville was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week in men's swimming and diving and classmate Tanja Kylliainen of Louisville earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors in women's swimming and diving in the fifth weekly awards of the 2012-13 season.

 

De Lucca helped Louisville's men's team win the Purdue Invitational with four individual first-place finishes. The three-day meet went from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18 and featured Cincinnati, Michigan, Missouri State, Purdue, Southern Illinois and Utah. The sophomore posted the fastest times in the country in the 50-and 100-yard freestyles with marks of 19.81 and 42.69 respectively. He also claimed the 100 butterfly in 48.32 and the 200 freestyle in 1:36.73 and was a member of the 200 medley relay that placed first in 1:28.21

 

Kylliainen claimed three first-place finishes to help the Cardinals place second in the Purdue Invitational. The sophomore posted national top-10 times in the country in three events. She won the 200 individual medley in 1:59.54, the 400 individual medley in 4:10.24 and the 200 fly in 1:56.95.

 

The 2012-13 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly awards will be announced on Dec. 4.

  • Louisville and Notre Dame ranked No. 17 and No. 21 respectively in the Nov. 13 women's CSCAA coaches' poll. The Fighting Irish and Cardinals ranked No. 18 and No. 23 nationally in the men's Nov. 6 CSCAA coaches' poll.
  • Junior Joao De Lucca of Louisville has the two fastest times in the country in the 50 and 100 freestyles with marks of 19.81 and 42.69 respectively. Louisville sophomore Caryle Blondell, has the third best time in both those events with a mark of 19.90 in the 50 freestyle and 43.16 in the 100 freestyle.
  • Junior Kameron Chastain and Addison Bray of Louisville have the two fastest times in the country in the 100 breaststroke. Chastain has the best time in the country at 53.70 and Bray finished right behind him at 53.72. Bray also has the fastest time in the country in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in 1:55.82 and Chastain has the fourth best mark in the event with a time of 1:58.32.
  • The Louisville men's 200 freestyle relay squad has the fastest time in the country with a mark of 1:18.48. The men's 400 freestyle relay team is third in the country at 2:53.05.
  • The 200 medley relay team at Cincinnati has the third best mark in the country with a time of 1:29.56.
  • Freshman Kelsi Worrell of Louisville has the third best mark in the 100 fly with a time of 53.02.
  • Senior Adam Maczewski of Pittsburgh has the third fastest mark in the country with a time of 47.59 in the 100 backstroke.
  • The Louisville men's 200 medley team finished in 1:28.21, recording the fourth fastest time and the 400 medley squad swam in 3:15.26, which is the sixth best time in the country.
  • Sophomore John Fatigati of Providence finished the 800 freestyle in 8:53.50 to mark the fifth fastest time in the event this season.
  • Freshman Bryan Draganosky of Louisville has the fifth fastest time in the country in the 1,650 freestyle at 15:12.51.
  • Two members of the Louisville women's team rank in the top 10 in the 200 fly. Sophomore Tanja Kylliainen and freshman Devon Bibault have the sixth and ninth fastest times in the country with marks of 1:56.95 and 1:57.4 respectively. Kylliainen also has the sixth best mark in the 200 individual medley at 1:56.95 and seventh fastest time in the 400 individual medley at 4:10.24.
  • The Louisville women's 200 freestyle relay team has a time of 1:31.50, which is the sixth fastest in the country. The Cardinals' 400 medley team has the ninth best time in NCAA with a mark of 3:38.60.
  • Senior Alex Burtch of Louisville finished the 200 individual medley in 1:47.86 for the eighth best mark in the country.
  • Freshman Nolan Tesone of Louisville has the eight best mark in the 400 individual medley at 3:51.93.
  • The Pittsburgh men's 800 freestyle relay team has the eighth best time in the country with a mark of 6:36.18.
  • Senior Roxanne Tammadge of Villanova has the ninth fastest NCAA time in the 1,650 freestyle with a mark of 16:31.87.
  • Sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame has the ninth best time in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 1:59.70.
  • Sophomore Abigail Chin of Louisville has the ninth best time in the country in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:11.92
