PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Pittsburgh senior Jake Van Roekel has been selected BIG EAST Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week and Seton Hall sophomore Kerrie Kolackovsky is the BIG EAST Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.
Van Roekel posted four first-place finishes while competing against Cincinnati, Connecticut and West Virginia in the Pitt Invitational. He anchored two relay teams, the 400-yard medley relay and the 800 free relay, that recorded NCAA Championship provisional qualifying times. Pitt's 400 medley relay team finished in 3:16.87, five seconds faster than their previous season-best time. In the 800 freestyle relay, Van Roekel swam his leg in 1:39.56, while the team finished in 6:39.55. Individually, he won the 200-yard freestyle with a team season-best time of 1:40.36. He also recorded team season-bests in the 50 free (20.74) and the 100 free (45.46) events.
Kolackovsky earned two top finishes and set a school record while participating at the Patriot Invitational. She finished the 1,650-yard freestyle in a record 16:55.80. The previous record of 16:57.13 was set by Michelle Ducharme during the 2005-06 season. Kolackovsky also led all participants in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.48.
The 2011-12 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly honors will be awarded on December 6.
