Swimming and Diving Weekly News and Notes

·         The 2012 BIG EAST Conference Championships will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa.  The diving competition will take place Feb. 10-12 with swimming action Feb. 15-18.
 
·         All BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Teams will take a holiday break for Thanksgiving.  Meets will resume on Dec. 1 with the next weekly reporting on Dec. 6.
 
 
·         On Wednesday Nov. 16, Providence participated in "Pink out the Pool" at the University of Rhode Island.  Both teams sported pink t-shirts that were sold.  All proceeds of the meet went to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
 
·         Cincinnati freshman Helena Pikhartova set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.76.  The previous record was 2:15.68, previously set by senior Josefin Wede on Dec. 4, 2010.  Pikhartova's mark qualifies for the NCAA `B' cut.
 
·         Louisville's Joao DeLuca has the top time among all NCAA swimmers in two events.  He leads the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.16 and tops the 200 free at 1:35.64.
 
·         The Cardinals' Riley Martin ranks in the top-10 in two categories.  He sits at second in the 500 freestyle (4:18.16) and fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (15:14.59).
 
·         Three BIG EAST athletes rank among the nation's best in the backstroke where Louisville's Brendon Andrews holds the fastest time in the 100 back at 47.30.  Pittsburgh's Adam Maczewski ranks sixth in the same event with a time of 47.76.  UofL's Pedro Oliveira places sixth in the 200 back at 1:45.46.
 
·         Six Louisville athletes rank in the top-10 in breaststroke events.  In the men's 100 breaststroke, Carlos Almeida ranks fourth with a time of 54.21 while Kameron Chastain ranks sixth with 54.43.  Gisselle Kohoyda ranks third in the women's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:10.64.  In the men's 200 breaststroke, Carlos Almeida ranks third, Addison Bray ranks fourth and Kameron Chastain ranks sixth with times of 1:58.47, 1:58.71 and 1:59.41, respectively.
 
·         The Cardinals' Tanja Kylliainen ranks in three individual events.  She places sixth in the 200 butterfly at 1:57.28.  She also ranks in two individual medleys, ranking fifth in both the 200 IM (1:59.46) and the 400 IM (4:11.43).
 
·         Pedro Oliveira and Riley Martin of Louisville rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 200 butterfly.  Oliveira finished in 1:47.01 while Martin swam in 1:47.51.
 
·         Nine Louisville relay teams are currently ranked in the top-10 nationally in different events.  The women rank sixth in the 200 free relay (1:32.27), ninth in the 400 free relay (3:21.24), seventh in the 800 free relay (7:20.45), third in the 200 medley relay (1:39.91) and seventh in the 400 medley relay).  The men hold the nation's fastest time in both the 800 free relay (6:32.15) and the 400 medley relay (3:14.94).  They also rank second in the 200 free relay (1:19.63), and second in the 200 medley relay (1:28.04).
 
·         The West Virginia women hold the nation's eighth fastest time in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:20.90.
 
·         The Pittsburgh men rank eighth in the 800 free relay at 6:39.55 and fifth in the 400 medley relay at 3:16.87.
