Notre Dame Sweeps First Tennis Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame junior Greg Andrews was named BIG EAST Player of the Week in men's tennis and Notre Dame junior Jennifer Kellner was named BIG EAST Player of the Week in women's tennis in the first weekly awards of the spring 2013 season.

 

Andrews, ranked No. 80 in the Jan. 3 ITA Men's Singles Rankings, went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to lead the Fighting Irish to 7-0 wins over Marquette and Western Illinois. The junior claimed both wins in the No. 1 position, defeating Marquette's Dan Mamalat in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 and Western Illinois' Christoph Haetel 6-1, 6-2. Andrews, paired with senior Spencer Talmadge, won his doubles match in the No. 1 position with an 8-2 win over Mamalet and Vukasin Teofanovic of Marquette.

 

Killner led Notre Dame to wins over Bowling Green (7-0) and No. 24 Illinois (4-3). The junior went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles. She defeated Nikki Chiricosta of Bowling Green 6-4, 6-3 and No. 59 Allison Falkin of Illinois 6-3, 6-0. Kellner's win over Falkin marked her first career victory against an ITA top-60 opponent.
