PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame sophomore Greg Andrews was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week and USF sophomore Loreto Alonso Martinez was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Andrews was a combined 7-1 in the opening week of the season with 4 individual victories and three doubles wins, helping the Irish to a 3-1 start. He toppled the No. 24th ranked player Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois 6-2, 6-3 while playing at the No. 2 position for Notre Dame. Andrews also beat competition from Illinois State, Toledo and William and Mary, all in two sets. In doubles, Andrews teamed with senior Casey Watt for three victories while playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Their only loss came at the hands of Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon of No. 17 Illinois.
Martinez led the No. 42 Bulls to a convincing 2-0 week with wins over Syracuse and No. 55 Ohio State by winning two singles matches and two doubles matches. In singles competition, she grinded it out for two 3-set victories while playing at the No. 2 position. Martinez joined with partner Ecaterina Vasenina to win twice at the No. 1 slot, including a victory over the No. 52 team of Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters of OSU.
The next weekly awards will be handed out on Jan. 31.
