PROVIDENCE, R.I. - USF senior Yannick Yoshizawa was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week and Notre Dame senior Shannon Mathews was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Yoshizawa posted three victories over the weekend while participating in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Las Angeles, Calif. He scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Johannes Markel of UNLV on Jan. 29 in the second round of the tournament. In doubles, he teamed with Oliver Pramming for two weekend victories; two 8-5 decisions over teams from UNLV and UNC-Wilmington.
Mathews notched a 3-1 overall record and defeated two ranked opponents last weekend at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. In singles action, she posted two straight-set victories, including a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 28 Cristina Stancu of Maryland. Mathews improved her singles record to 5-0 on the season and 2-1 against ranked opposition and has yet to lost a set through five dual matches. In doubles, she combined with Kristy Frilling for a 1-1 weekend record. The duo pulled out an 8-5 victory over the No. 16 pair of Vicky Brook and Hanna Yu of Yale to knock of their first ranked pair of the season.
