PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville freshman Sebastian Stiefelmeyer was named BIG EAST Men's Tennis Player of the Week and DePaul freshman Rebeca Mitrea was named BIG EAST Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Stiefelmeyer recorded two singles victories, including a two-set win over a ranked opponent, to lead the Cardinals to a 1-1 week. He beat Michigan's Alex Petrone 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot for a point in a 5-2 loss to the No. 31 Wolverines. The rookie also downed No. 118 Leandro Toledo 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 position to give UofL a 6-1 win over No. 29 Minnesota. Stiefelmeyer is unbeaten in singles this season, with a 6-0 record.
Mitrea recorded a singles and a doubles win while helping DePaul take down No. 36 SMU 6-1. This marked the first time the Blue Demons have beaten a ranked opponent since April 24, 2010. Mitrea only lost one set in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Kris Roberts at the No. 4 spot. The win was her 10th-straight victory, a streak dating back to Oct. 20, 2011. She also teamed with Patricia Fargas to topple Ashley Turpin and Elena Fayner 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles position.
This is the first weekly honor for both Stiefelmeyer and Mitrea.
